Atletico Madrid head into their final game of the season still with a chance to overtake their main local rivals Real Madrid and secure themselves a second place finish.
Diego Simeone's side are just a point behind Real Madrid ahead of the final game of the season, in which they come up against a Villarreal side who have confirmed themselves a place in next season's Europa League.
Los Colchoneros spent the winter break down in fifth place in La Liga, but a three month unbeaten run between mid-January and the end April in which they picked up 32 points from 12 games saw them climb back within reach of last year's La Liga champions.
Madrid's fall off in form in April saw Atleti replace them as the second placed team in the league but Simeone's side have dropped points against the bottom two side in the league in their last four games which has seen them drop back down to fourth.
A top three finish has already been guaranteed for the side from the capital so local bragging rights are all that are at stake on Sunday, while their opponents Villarreal are guaranteed a fifth placed finish, their highest for three years.
Quique Setien's side had been in the hunt for their first top four finish since 2016 until last week when they failed to capitalise on Real Sociedad's defeat to Atletico Madrid, as the Yellow Submarine fell to a 2-1 loss at Rayo Vallecano.
The defeat in Madrid last weekend put an end to a run of five wins and a draw in their previous six games to mount a serious challenge for the Champions League places, but the loss leaves them five points adrift ahead of the final game.
Villarreal won the previous meeting between these two teams back in August, which was their first win over Atleti since 2018, though five of the eight meetings in that period had ended as a draw.
