When the 2023 ACC football schedule was released with dates and times, this weekend’s Virginia Tech at Boston College matchup in mid-November offered a lot of intrigue. It had the opportunity to be a key game for both teams in terms of becoming bowl-eligible, but the Hokies are the ones entering the game needing this game more than the Eagles.
At 6-3, BC enters winners of five straight and are already bowl-eligible, while Virginia Tech enters at 4-5 and needs a win desperately to remain in the hunt for a bowl. Chestnut Hill in November is not a very good thought for the Hokies and their fans, but truth be told, they need to find a way to do something they have yet to do this season, which is to win a game away from Blacksburg.

As I write this article, Virginia Tech is a 1.5 favorite after opening as a 2.5 underdog with the under at 49 and the over at 50.

Virginia Tech
Kyron Drones, QB: Simply put, this game is going to come down to the quarterbacks and who can make more plays with their arms and legs. Drones has been very good at home this season, but on the road, it’s been a different story. Of the four road games he’s played in, BC offers an opportunity to turn things around. This is a big game for the sophomore signal caller for the Hokies.
Boston College
Thomas Castellanos, QB: Since BC coach Jeff Hafley has gone with the Central Florida transfer, the Eagles have been better and like Drones, he brings a different offensive dynamic. He has rushed for 760 yards and is tough for a defense to bring down. It is going to be very important for the Hokies to be patient on defense and bring him down when they can. He’s terrific at extending plays after the first hit.
Virginia Tech vs. Boston College, Prediction
Even though the Eagles are 6-3, they are not your average Power 5 6-3 team. Their win over FCS Holy Cross was a struggle, as was their seven-point win over 1-8 Connecticut. They played Florida State tough, but the case can be made that the Seminoles were looking past them toward their showdown with Clemson seven days later. Getting off the field on third down is going to be key for the Hokies and containing Castellanos is an absolute must. Tech’s road woes are widely known and out of all their road games to date, this one on paper looks like a good matchup. Until Pry’s team can prove that they can win a game away from Lane Stadium, it’s hard to go with them even though they enter the game as a slight favorite.
