Weatherbys Super Sprint tips and odds: Relief Rally backed for glory

The two-year-olds take centre stage at Newbury on Saturday afternoon in the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes. The 5f contest for sprinters is worth £250,000 in prize money and the weight each runner carries is determined by their sale price.

Richard Hannon Sr has won this race a record seven times and his son Richard Hannon Jr has been successful on four occasions since taking over the licence. The latter has seven runners in the field this year, including La Guarida, Dapperling, The Camden Colt and Ziggy’s Phoenix.

Rider Sean Levey is one of just four jockeys to have won this contest more than once. He was successful on board Happy Romance in 2020 and Gubbass in 2021. The two-time winner is set to ride Dapperling this year as he bids to hold the record outright for the most victories in the saddle.

Queen Mary runner-up to land top prize

Only two horses in this year’s Weatherbys Super Sprint field have a rating of 100 or higher. RELIEF RALLY has the highest with an official rating of 106 after three runs on the track. William Haggas’s charge has been outstanding, and shown she has a huge future in the sprint division.

This daughter of Kodiac made a smart debut at Windsor in April where she showed very few signs of inexperience. She stayed on strongly inside the final furlong to score by two lengths. The horses that finished third and fifth in that contest have since gone on to prevail.

Connections of the Windsor winner will have been even more pleased by what they saw from their filly on the second start of her career. She was held up patiently in the early stages of her run at Salisbury (5f) before another late surge. Once again, she was in full control of the race in the final furlong.

In a 26-runner field in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, Relief Rally had to settle for second place in what must have been a frustrating outcome for her owners and trainer. She just failed to reel in Crimson Advocate in that 5f contest, going down by a nose. Had there been an extra few yards in that race, she would have taken the first prize.

There is likely to be a lot more to come from Haggas’s filly this season. If she improves again here on her fourth outing, she will be the one they have to beat in this valuable race for two-year-olds.

Selection: Relief Rally @ 5/4 with Betfred

Bobsleigh the pick of Johnson-Houghton pair

Eve Johnson-Houghton has two strong chances at Newbury this year with BOBSLEIGH and Juniper Berries. The former is the pick of the pair as he has already tasted success twice, with wins at Brighton (5½f) and Epsom (6f).

Connections of this son of Elzaam opted to take their chances in the Queen Mary this year. Unfortunately for them he was slowly into stride, which did not help his cause. He eventually ran on well for sixth place behind the impressive victor River Tiber.

Bobsleigh, with an official rating of 102, has already done enough to establish himself as one of the best in his age group over 5f. He remains open to improvement, which makes him a serious player now.

Selection: Bobsleigh @ 11/2 with Betfred
