Went out a cup winner

Runbro won the Nhill Cup last month. He has been retired due to a tendon injury. The stable will find a good home for him. G. O’Loughlin is restricted to track work because he is too fat to ride.

Bob McKay passed away recently. His funeral was held at the Naracoorte racecourse. Terry McAuliffe provided a phantom race call of some of the horses raced by McKay. Ken Wagner also passed recently and his funeral will be held today at Murray Bridge. Brian Butson, a driver, trainer and committeeman of Mount Gambier club died last week aged 78. He moved from Mount. Gambieri many years ago and died in Gawler. He was a former shearer who bred a couple of successful horses.

Kate Walters won her first race since November 2021 at Warrnambool last Sunday. Last week John Brooks had his first winner since 2015 at Naracoorte. Oamaru Poppy caused a boilover in the final event at Glenburnie. The locals won three of the five remaining events. Melinke won the 1204-metre maiden at Penola. Bossy Britches gave the Michael O’Leary stable its first win of this season in 2060-meter BM 64 handicap.

Jackie Barker has started 2023 in a blaze of glory. She had a full book of six drives at the meeting here last Tuesday night and finished with three winners, a second and a third. Two of her winners were for the Drumborg stable of Rebecca East. Martins Magic won his second race in the space of a month. Lethal Louie made it three wins from three starts at Greenwald Paceway.

Went out a cup winner. Hamilton trots is on Sunday, January 15. Mount Gambier gallops is Sunday January 22.
