What has been said in the lead up to the game?

Leinster coach Stuart Lancaster heaped praise on La Rochelle boss Ronan O'Gara, saying: “In 2016, I went and did some consultancy for Racing when he was there.

“At the time I remember feeling impressed that he’d left Munster and gone to a different country to learn.

“That obviously led into the Crusaders and obviously back to France.

“If you were going to recommend a pathway then I think he’s gone down the right route to develop experience from outside something he knows.

“He’s a deep-thinking coach. A lot of players go into coaching maybe because they don’t know what else to do but I think he’s always thought about coaching.

WORLD CLASS SQUAD

“There’s no doubt he’s worked with good coaches and accumulated a lot of knowledge and is now working with a brilliant group of players.

“I don’t know the history of La Rochelle in terms of their recruitment but when you look at the quality of the squad they have that he’s coaching, it is world class.

“I know Exeter well, I know Saracens well and they dominated both of those teams.

“And it shows how good a coach he is that he’s managed to harness the talent they have and deliver it in a way which makes them strong on both sides of the ball.

“They’re obviously competitive on both sides of the ball in that defensively they’re very strong and they’ve got aggressive line speed, competitive at the breakdown.

“In attack they have the capacity, because of the size of the forwards, to play a tight game but also a game with width as they have power and pace.

“If you were going to pick your dream backline to recruit, you’d have power, pace and footballers — and La Rochelle have all three.

“They had a close game against Gloucester, the reaction that I saw in the next performance, he’d obviously had a crack at them and that a sign of a good coach.”
