When is the 2023 Rugby World Cup third-place play-off?

Argentina and England will meet to decide third place after losing their respective Rugby World Cup semi-finals.

The two teams have already played each other once at this tournament, in the pool stages, when England won 27-10.

Steve Borthwick’s side looked to be holding on comfortably in their semi-final against South Africa but the Boks set up a grandstand finish in the final 10 minutes, winning 16-15 in Paris

Meanwhile, Michael Cheika’s side were well beaten in their third Rugby World Cup semi-final appearance, with the All Blacks thrashing Los Pumas in a 44-6 rout to reach their fifth final.

The Pumas have never reached the final but have played for third place twice – winning in 2007 and losing in 2015.

England will play Argentina in the so-called bronze final on Friday, October 27 (the day before the final). The game kicks off at 8pm (BST), 9pm local time and 4pm in Argentina.

Argentina have played here only once during this year’s tournament, losing to New Zealand in the semi-final

Similar to the Pumas, Steve Borthwick’s side have played here once already during this year’s World Cup, losing to South Africa in the semi-final.

Henry Arundell and Freddie Steward will start on the wings for England, with Marcus Smith returning at full-back, as coach Steve Borthwick makes eight changes from the team beaten by South Africa in the semis.

Giving opportunities to several players who have not featured much in the tournament, an all-new front row sees props Ellis Genge and Will Stuart either side of hooker Theo Dan, who has spent the last three matches as an unused replacement.

Ollie Chessum comes back into the second row while Sam Underhill, who joined the squad as an injury replacement two weeks ago, starts at openside flanker.

Tom Curry, who will win his 50th cap, moves to the blindside to reprise the successful back-row partnership from the 2019 tournament, with Ben Earl at No 8.

Scrum-half Ben Youngs starts his first game of the tournament to extend his caps record to 127, with captain Owen Farrell at fly-half.

Jamie George, Bevan Rodd, Dan Cole, David Ribbans, Lewis Ludlam, Danny Care, George Ford and Ollie Lawrence are on the bench.
