Who will win the IPL?

The IPL 2023 season is fast approaching, and fans will be looking forward to some thrilling, hard-hitting cricket betting action. The T20 competition moves into its 16 edition in 2023 as the popularity of the famous tournament continues to grow. With a look ahead to the new season, our cricket experts analyse who has the best odds of winning the IPL 2023.

One of the exciting angles of cricket betting is picking who will win IPL 2023. Once again, 10 teams will battle it out for the top prize, which last year was won by the Gujarat Titans.

On this page, as well as looking at the strengths and weaknesses of the teams in this year’s competition, we look back through the history of the IPL and at how to bet on one of the world’s leading cricket leagues.

2022 IPL recap

The 2022 edition of the IPL saw an expansion of the league, with two new teams, the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans, joining the fray. The latter would go on to become the surprise IPL title winners in a stunning debut season.

At the end of the group stage format, debutants the Gujarat Titans topped the charts, followed by the Rajasthan Royals. Those two met in Qualifier 1, which was won by the Gujarat Titans, with losers, the Rajasthan Royals going to Qualifier 2.

There, the Royals met the winner of the Eliminator match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Lucknow Super Giants. This was Bangalore, who went forward to then be toppled by the Royals in Qualifier 2.

In the 2022 IPL Final, which was played in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans successfully chased down their winning target of 131 against Royal Challengers Bangalore to land the IPL title. In the end, the Titans claimed the victory by seven wickets in just 18.1 overs of their response.

  • Orange Cap Winner (most runs): Jos Buttler, Rajasthan Royals
  • Purple Cap Winner (most wickets): Yuzvendra Chahal, Rajasthan Royals
  • IPL MVP: Jos Buttler

The 2022 IPL was played from 26 March to 29 May 2022, and all the group stage matches were played in Maharashtra, with Mumbai and Pune playing the role of host cities.

The highest price paid in the 2022 IPL auction was for Ishan Kishan, who was snapped up by the Mumbai Indians. England’s Liam Livingstone was the most expensive foreign player purchased in the auction, with the Punjab Kings splashing out for him.

Most IPL wins

The team with the most IPL wins in the history of the league are the Mumbai Indians, with five titles. Just two other teams, the Chennai Super Kings (four) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (two), have won the title on more than one occasion.

IPL 2023 odds for each team and their chances of success

Next, we look at the exciting action to come from the 2023 IPL. Once again, due to the IPL auction, each of the squads looks a little different from last term. The largest sum of money paid in the 2023 IPL auction was by the Punjab Kings as they made England’s Sam Curran the most expensive player in the history of the league.

IPL 2023 details

In total, there will be 74 matches to study for IPL cricket betting throughout the entire competition. The same format of the league from last year rolls over to this one.

There will be the initial group stage, from which the top two teams from each go through to the playoff stage of the season. Next, we look in more detail at each of the teams to help you decide who will win IPL 2023.

IPL Impact Player rule

The Impact Player rule was introduced in the 2022 IPL season and was popular as it offered teams a new angle for strategy. Each team can name four substitutes alongside their match-day 11.

Teams will be allowed to introduce one of the four players as an Impact Player during the match. The player who is replaced will sit out for the remainder of the game. If a team have already fielded four overseas players, then a substitute can only be an Indian player.

The Impact Player adds a new dimension to the action. For instance, it could be the Sunrisers introducing a batsman who is a specialist at left-arm pace bowling, or the Royal Challengers needing a fresh bowler to try to defend a lead.

Group A

  • Mumbai Indians
  • Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Delhi Capitals
  • Lucknow Super Giants

Group B

  • Chennai Super Kings
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore
  • Punjab Kings
  • Gujarat Titans

Mumbai Indians – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Mumbai Indians finished bottom of the points table in the 2022 IPL season but are the current joint 6/1 favourites for 2023 success. The IPL’s most successful team will be striving to get back to the top this year.

They have retained a lot of firepower, with captain Rohit Sharma leading the batting, and match winner Jasprit Bumrah heading the bowling. Throw in the likes of overseas stars Jofra Archer and newcomers Cameron Green and Jhye Richardson, and the Indians should have the pieces to go close.

Current IPL win odds: 6/1

Chances: 2022 was a bust for Mumbai, but the return of England’s Jofra Archer to fitness is great news for the Indians, and snapping up Australia’s Cameron Green in the auction may have been a masterstroke.

Kolkata Knight Riders – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Kolkata Knight Riders will have been disappointed with their 2022 effort. They were busy in the 2023 IPL auction trying to solve some issues and play catch-up. They spent on bringing in Shakib Al Hasan, David Wiese and Mandeep Singh, among others. However, captain Shreyas Iyer may be casting an eye over a lack of batting depth.

Current IPL win odds: 9/1

Chances: The Kolkata Knight Riders don’t have the most balanced and stable squad in this year’s IPL, and appear to be lacking some star power with the bat in particular.

Rajasthan Royals – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Rajasthan Royals will be looking to build on their successes of last year, even though they fell short in the Final. Once again, they have the makings of being a class act with last season’s MVP Jos Buttler retained.

Buttler is a game-changer, as proven many times before, and he now lines up in the new squad with the likes of former England captain Joe Root and other big players such as Trent Boult, Jason Holder and Yuzvendra Chalal.

Current IPL win odds: 7/1

Chances: It’s hard to imagine that the Royals won’t go close to the title again this season. Some wonderful additions from the auction, such as Holder and Root, could take them to the next level.

Delhi Capitals – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Delhi Capitals should be competitive again, as they were last year. Their big auction purchases were Mukesh Kumar and Rilee Rossouw, who add to the quality core that they already have with Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Starc, David Warner and Prithvi Shaw. There wasn’t too much wrong with the balance in the squad last year – it’s just a matter of them kicking on.

Current IPL win odds: 6/1

Chances: The Capitals can’t be counted out of a title bid. They have a well-rounded squad, and there’s a glittering array of match winners. Delhi can get close, as long as their top order can hold it together.

Lucknow Super Giants – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Lucknow Super Giants had an impressive debut season in 2022, reaching the playoffs. Were they a one-hit wonder, or can they follow it up? It was always going to be interesting to see what they did in this season’s auction, and they have spent big.

The Super Giants have filled out their squad, with the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Daniel Sams and Naveen-ul-Haq coming in. Pooran was an expensive buy, but at the same time looks like a risky pull from the auction.

Current IPL win odds: 8/1

Chances: There has been a lot of change to the squad this year, and this campaign may not be as settled or exciting for the Giants. They may experience a few struggles this term.

Chennai Super Kings – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Chennai Super Kings lacked any kind of cutting edge in their performances last year. They dipped into the 2023 auction to snap up the marquee signing of Ben Stokes to try to change their fortunes. Ajinkya Rahane is another interesting addition, as is Kyle Jamieson. However, overall, MS Dhoni’s troops still look a bit short of strength.

Current IPL win odds: 9/1

Chances: A fully fit Ben Stokes is probably going to help the Kings pick up extra points this season, but it’s unlikely that the all-rounder can carry an average-looking squad anywhere near the playoffs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad required an overhaul, and that is just what they did in this season’s auction. They have tried to bolster their ranks and have some exciting new talent, with the likes of Harry Brook and Heinrich Klaasen coming in as overseas players. It’s going to be a new-look Hyderabad on paper, but if the squad gels, then they may be capable of an upset.

Current IPL win odds: 9/1

Chances: The Sunrisers have an interesting setup, and they may be the dark horse of this season’s IPL. They had a good auction, and it will be all about how quickly their new squad forms a cohesive unit.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

Royal Challengers Bangalore have more than enough in their squad to make a title challenge after reaching the playoffs last year. Virat Kohli focusing on batting and not captaining remains a positive. Faf du Plessis is once again carrying the armband. There’s a very good core in place, and a well-rounded squad make Bangalore a serious challenger.

Current IPL win odds: 13/2

Chances: You would expect the Royal Challengers to be back in the thick of the action. Their auction was conservative this time around, as they didn’t have many holes to plug.

Punjab Kings – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

The Punjab Kings couldn’t reach the playoffs last year, but weren’t too far away from being a stronger product. Their first IPL title remains elusive, but they have some fantastic overseas batting power in Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow.

Captain Shikhar Dhawan and main strike bowler Kagiso Rabada will have a lot on their shoulders. The Punjab Kings splashed out massively on Sam Curran in the auction, but will that be enough?

Current IPL win odds: 8/1

Assessment: The Kings have a decent platform, but they may just be lacking the depth in their bowling attack to make a deep enough run to get to the playoffs.

Gujarat Titans – IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses

Can the champions defend their IPL title? The Gujarat Titans were so impressive last year, looking like a united team from the start of the campaign. They handled pressure situations with aplomb and got the massive addition of New Zealand’s Kane Williamson in the auction to join David Miller and Shubman Gill in an impressive batting line-up.

Current IPL win odds: 5/1

Chances: The Titans have retained a lot of depth and have added some very good squad pieces through the auction. Title defences are hard, but they look as though they will give another excellent account of themselves.

Types of IPL bets

The match result in IPL betting is one of the most popular ways of getting into the action. It’s commonly used by seasoned bettors and newcomers alike. It’s a very accessible market, but it’s always worth boosting your knowledge of other IPL betting markets.

Some popular IPL cricket bets

  • Match Winner
  • Over/Under Total Runs
  • Top Batsman
  • Top Bowler
  • Top Team Batsman
  • Top Team Bowler
  • Man of the Match
  • Winner of Coin Toss

Sometimes, you may see a heavy odds-on favourite in a fixture that doesn’t represent any value. Alternative markets can be looked at to find some value bets. It could be picking an Over/Under Total Runs for the entire fixture, the top batsman for a team, or the overall top bowler in a match.

There’s a good variety available when it comes to IPL bets. Always do your research before making bets, looking at things such as team news, current form, and head-to-head records.
