Wolves vs Manchester City predictions

Manchester City will not be able to better last season’s treble this time around.

The only way they could have done so was by becoming the first English side to win a quadruple, adding the EFL Cup to the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup they claimed last term.

But City were knocked out of English football’s secondary cup competition in midweek, as they went down 1-0 to Newcastle United.

A trip to St James’ Park in the third round was always going to be a tricky test. And so it proved, as Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game early in the second half.

Both Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola made changes for the match, so it was not exactly City’s first-choice XI that fell to defeat.

As well as the suspended Rodri and injured Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones and Bernardo Silva, Guardiola left out Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Ederson, Ruben Dias and Kyle Walker.

Needless to say, the City boss will be disappointed to be out of a competition he has won four times in the past.

But the EFL Cup ranks bottom of the list of priorities of most Premier League managers, so defeat at St James’ Park is unlikely to produce any sort of hangover for this trip to Wolves.

City will be back to full strength (minus the enforced absentees) at the weekend, as they see their seventh consecutive triumph in the top flight.

The reigning champions are now just three wins away from matching the all-time Premier League record of nine victories at the start of a campaign, set by Chelsea in 2005/06.

📝 Wolves vs Manchester City betting tips

Manchester City can preserve their 100 percent start to the Premier League season against Wolves on Saturday.

Manchester City to win and both teams to score - 15/8 (bet365)

Manchester City have made an ominous start to the Premier League campaign with those six wins on the bounce.

If their potential challengers were looking to take any sort of comfort from that record, they would no doubt point to the fact that the champions have not exactly had the toughest schedule so far.

Burnley, Newcastle (at home), Sheffield United, Fulham, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest are teams you would expect a title contender to beat.

Three of those sides finished outside the top eight of the Premier League last season, while two were playing in the Championship.

Guardiola will already have half an eye on next weekend’s crunch clash with Arsenal, but before that City must face RB Leipzig in the Champions League as well as Wolves on Saturday.

Gary O’Neil will hope that those two upcoming matches prove to be a distraction, but City are accustomed to juggling multiple competitions.

However, Guardiola’s men have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last three away games, while Wolves have scored in (and lost) both of their home matches to date.

Nelson Semedo to be booked - 15/8 (bet365)

It is not an outlandish prediction to suggest Manchester City will almost certainly dominate possession this weekend.

Only Chelsea have had a higher share of the ball so far this term, and it is worth bearing in mind that the Blues have been behind much more often than City, which tends to lead to a team having more possession.

Wolves will not expect to have a great deal of the ball on Saturday, and O’Neil will have spent the last few days drilling his players on team shape out of possession.

Patience will be key. That term is often used when discussing situations where a side has the ball, but it also applies when the opponent has it.

However, with the home crowd urging them on it would not be a surprise to see Wolves give away a fair few fouls here.

Nelson Semedo is one player to keep an eye on. He has already received three yellow cards this term - only Anthony Gordon and Nicolas Jackson have had their names taken more often.

Moreover, the Wolves right-back will be up against a tricky customer in either Foden, Jack Grealish or Jeremy Doku.

Julian Alvarez to score or assist - 4/6 (bet365)

Julian Alvarez was not a guaranteed starter for Manchester City last term, but he made the absolute most of the minutes he was on the pitch.

The Argentina international, who was a key part of his country’s World Cup triumph last winter, scored 17 club goals in all competitions.

He is on course to be even more prolific this time around, having scored twice in the Premier League and twice in the Champions League already.

The injury to De Bruyne led to speculation over who would fill the void in attacking midfield, with Foden and Silva touted as potential options.

But so far it is Alvarez who has been favoured in the position behind Haaland - and Guardiola is delighted with how things are going for him.

The former River Plate man has three assists to his name in the Premier League so far, a tally bettered by only Pedro Neto, James Maddison and Mohamed Salah.

We fancy his chances of being directly involved in another City goal this weekend.
