Barcelona vs Lyon Prediction

Barcelona has had the perfect season and in winning the Primera Division ended the campaign with a 100% record – 30 wins out of a possible 30 – scoring 159 goals along the way. Part of Barca’s incentive here will be to avenge their defeat in the 2019 final. They qualified for the final thanks to a 5-3 aggregate win over Wolfsburg – who actually beat the Catalans 2-0 in the second leg.

Lyon too has had an outstanding domestic campaign but with two games remaining will be unable to replicate Barca’s 100% record, having dropped two points when drawing away at Saint-Etienne in March. But it was the most minor of blemishes in what has been a fantastic season during which they have conceded just eight goals in the league. They qualified for the final thanks to a 5-3 aggregate win over PSG.

Lyon Win Five from Five Against Barca

In terms of form, there is very little to choose between these two but if we look at head-to-heads they have been totally dominated by Lyon who have won all five meetings – three of them coming in the Champions League.  Lyon’s most recent win over Barca came in a pre-season friendly in August 2021.

Barcelona vs Lyon Head-to-Head Stats

Martens a Doubt for Barca

In terms of team news, Barcelona will definitely be without Jana Fernández, Bruna Vilamala and Cata Coll, all of whom remain on the sidelines while recovering from long-term injuries. In addition, the Catalans will have to leave it as late as possible to see if Lieke Martens has recovered from a hamstring injury that kept her out of both semifinals against Wolfsburg.

Marozsán Out for Lyon

The list of absentees is a little shorter for Lyon. They already know they will be without Amel Majri for this game as she is now on maternity leave, but the only other significant absentee is German international Dzsenifer Marozsán who picked up a serious knee injury while on international duty in April.

Barcelona vs Lyon Team Lineups and Injuries

Barcelona Projected Lineup: Paños, Paredes, Pilar-Leon, Engen, Torrejón, Guijarro, Putellas, Bonmati, Hansen, Pina, Rolfö.

Barcelona Injuries: Fernández, Coll, Vilamala.

Lyon Projected Lineup: Bouhaddi, Morroni, Buchanan, Renard, Mbock-Bathy, Bacha, Henry, Cascarino, Macario, Malard, Hegerberg.

Barcelona vs Lyon Pick

This final has simply boiled down to a clash between the two biggest and most powerful teams in European Women’s soccer. The stakes couldn’t possibly be higher as the best-of-the-best go toe to toe. With both teams coming into this off the back of such outstanding campaigns, both will be bursting full of confidence but I do wonder if the huge psychological advantage that Lyon has over Barca still holds.

If so, this could yet be the key factor but there’s no doubt Barcelona’s star-studded and free-scoring attack will give Lyon’s miserly defense their toughest workout of the season. For me, the value here is very much with the 5/1 for the Lyon win.
