Costa Rica qualified for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. They finished behind USA on goal difference. Costa Rica beat New Zealand in the inter-continental play-off.

Keylor Navas, Celso Borges, Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell are all 30 or over and have 523 international caps between them. Four of the eight defenders named in the squad are also 30 and over. Costa Rica won their group at the 2014 World Cup and were unbeaten in their first five games. They conceded two goals in five of their games and lost on penalties to Netherlands in quarter-finals.

11 of the 26-man squad are aged 30 or above, 10 are under 24 and have 10 caps or fewer. Jewison Bennette and Brandon Aguilera are the only outfielders playing in Europe. The squad has a lot of players between 24-29 years old with international experience.

Japan's biggest weakness is their lack of goalscoring. Japan have only scored 12 goals in 10 second round qualifiers. They drew 0-0 with Ecuador and China and lost 3-1 to Tunisia. The three strikers in the squad share eight international goals between them.

Japan's best player is probably Kamada. Kamadra is Frankfurt's top scorer in both the Bundesliga and Champions League this season. Japan will use him as the most advanced forward but with licence to drift wide into space.

Moriyasu was appointed as successor to Akira Nishino after he stepped down following Japan's World Cup exit. Moriyasu has brought through a number of young players and will probably keep his job if Japan finish third behind Spain and Germany.

The draw for the World Cup 2022 is tough. Spain, Germany, Costa Rica and Japan are in the group E.
