World Cup audition time: 10 would-be Socceroos to watch in A-League

The A-League season starts on Friday night. The World Cup in Qatar is in November 2022. Graham Arnold has to name his 26-man squad by November 14. Before that, he has a list of 55 players to choose from. Australia's opening match is against France in Doha. The A League season kicks off with a grand final rematch on the Friday.

Andrew Redmayne was the hero of Australia's World Cup qualifying win over Peru. His club form prior to that was not great. He lost his starting spot at Sydney FC to Tom Heward-Belle last season. Danny Vukovic is now pressing his case at the Mariners.

Rhyan Grant is a Sydney FC legend. He played right back for the club last season. Nathaniel Atkinson and Fran Karacic are not playing well at right-back. If injury strikes, Arnold might look to bring Grant to Qatar.

Brimmer won the Johnny Warren Medal as the A-League's best player last season. He is entering the prime of his career and has an improved attack in front of him this season, led by marquee star Luis Nani.

Arzani was the star of Australia's last World Cup campaign. He spent the last four years at Manchester City on loan. Arzana joined Macarthur FC this season. Dwight Yorke reckons Arzaani should be taken to Qatar.

Craig Goodwin is a winger who plays for Adelaide United. He was not selected for the last month's friendlies against New Zealand. Goodwin offers something different to other wide options in the Socceroos’ ranks.

Kuol has come off the bench half a dozen times for the Central Coast Mariners and hasn't started an A-League match yet. He almost scored twice against Barcelona and dazzled on debut for Australia. Kuol will miss the round-two clash with Wellington Phoenix due to travel demands. The 18-year-old has been selected for Young Socceroos, who will play three crucial qualifiers abroad for 2023 U-20 Asian Cup.

Marco Tilio is fighting for a regular starting spot at Melbourne City. He started just 13 of 25 games last season. Tilios missed a penalty in Australia's friendly against New Zealand in Auckland.

Mathew Leckie is nearing the end of his career and is not guaranteed a place in the national team. Awer Mabil and Martin Boyle are preferred wingers, while Kuol and Tilio are better options off the bench. Lecker can play up front too, so he needs to be in top form for Melbourne City.

Jason Cummings is a Scottish footballer who moved to Australia to play for Central Coast Mariners. He scored on his debut last month. The early signs from his game were good but he needs to improve his consistency and fitness to be considered for the Socceroos.

Jamie Maclaren is a World Cup hopeful for Australia. He is the best striker in the A-League and is likely to go to Qatar. His form hasn't always translated to the national team.
