Argentina’s Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappe are tied at five goals apiece at the top of the scoring charts for the 2022 World Cup with just one match still to play.

Messi’s teammate, Julian Alvarez, and Mbappe’s fellow countryman, Olivier Giroud are both just a goal behind the leading two and are also in contention.

Messi has scored in every match of the knockout stage so far on the way to Sunday’s grand finale, and with Mbappe not having scored in his last two games, the 35-year-old Argentine enters the weekend as the odds on favourite to win what would be his first World Cup Golden Boot.

Both Argentina and France booked their spot in Sunday’s finale with dominant displays in the semi finals.

Argentina will be taking part in their sixth World Cup final, aiming to lift the trophy, which they last won in 1986, for the third time.

The South American champions last reached the final in 2014 but fell to an extra time defeat against Germany in Brazil on that occasion.

Sunday will likely be Lionel Messi’s last ever World Cup match, giving the 35-year-old one final chance to win the all important trophy that has evaded him his whole career.

The PSG forward has starred for La Albiceleste all tournament, especially in their 3-0 win over 2018 runners up Croatia in the semi final on Tuesday night.

Lionel Scaloni’s men got off to the worst possible start to the campaign, being on the receiving end of the one of the World Cup’s biggest ever upsets as they fell 2-1 to Saudi Arabia after being a goal up at half time.

Five wins on the trot since then though has seen them finish top of Group C and reach the all important final, defeating Australia and Netherlands, the latter on penalties, before their semi final win over Croatia.

France managed to get the better of a giant killing Moroccan side who had beaten the likes of Belgium, Spain and Portugal on the way to reaching their first ever semi final, but couldn’t get past a French side who are so used to winning.

Didier Deschamps’ side are aiming to become just the third team in history to win back to back World Cups, and the first team to do so since the Brazil side of 1962.

Sunday will be Les Bleus‘ fourth ever World Cup final, all of which coming since 1998, and are aiming to lift the trophy for the third time.

In 2018 Deschamps became the third manager in history to both captain and manage their nation to lifting the World Cup.

Messi’s PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe is level goals with the Argentinian in the race for the Golden Boot, with both players on five goals each.

France also managed to top their group despite falling to defeat against Tunisia in the final group game, though Deschamps did make nine changes to his starting XI for the match.

The defending champions have won all three of their knockout games within 90 minutes, defeating Poland 3-1, England 2-1 and Morocco 2-0 en route to Sunday’s biggest show on Earth.

The last time the two sides met was in the second round of the 2018 tournament, with France winning 4-3 in a belter of a match in Kazan.
