Last season, 12 of 16 teams who held the playoff spots on the same day made the playoffs. Winnipeg, Vegas and Anaheim were replaced by Nashville, Los Angeles and Dallas. Maurice resigned as coach of Winnipeg a few weeks after Thanksgiving. He was replaced with the team that finished fifth.
