WTA Monterrey Quarterfinal Predictions Including Garcia vs Sherif

The quarterfinals are set at the WTA Monterrey, with six of the eight seeds still in the draw. It promises to be a day of high-quality tennis with a number of matchest that, at least on paper, look very close. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for all four matches, but who will book their place in Saturday’s semifinals?

WTA Monterrey Quarterfinal Predictions

Elise Mertens vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Head-to-head: first meeting

With both players are at a similar level and this their first meeting, this is a highly unpredictable match. That said, there are some indications as to which way it will go. Elise Mertens has experience on her side, with the Belgian a former-Australian Open semifinalist, but she has been playing indifferent tennis for some time now. Elisabetta Cocciaretto has been playing the better tennis so far this week and probably has the higher upside at the moment. Expect her to just about have the edge.

Ysaline Bonaventure vs Donna Vekic

Head-to-head: Bonaventure 2-1 Vekic

Ysaline Bonaventure might own a head-to-head lead over Donna Vekic, but those matches were played quite a long time ago now and both players are in a very different place in their careers. Vekic might not have kicked on as some expected her too, but she has made a good start to this season and she is, frankly, the superior player of these two. Expect this to be another reasonably comfortable day at the office for the Croatian, who dismissed Emma Navarro in the second round at the WTA Monterrey Open.

Zhu Lin vs Caroline Dolehide

Head-to-head: Dolehide 2-0 Zhu

Despite the massive gap in ranking between this pair, this should be a very tight match. The gap doesn’t reflect the actual difference in level, not withstanding Zhu Lin’s impressive recent run of form, and Caroline Dolehide has actually won the previous two matches between the pair. That rather suggests that this is a matchup she enjoys and it would not be a surprise if she came out on top once again.

Prediction: Dolehide in 3

Caroline Garcia vs Mayar Sherif

Head-to-head: first meeting

Given the relative lack of star quality in the draw, world #5 Caroline Garcia is the clear favourite to win the title at the WTA Monterrey Open. The Frenchwoman had had a very strong end to 2022 and will be looking to have an even bigger breakthrough in 2023, with Grand Slam glory surely at the forefront of her mind. A title in Monterrey might not be decisive in helping her realise that ambition, but winning is a habit and one that Garcia will want to continue developing. She’s clearly the best player left in the draw and, for all her quality, it is hard to imagine Mayar Sherif causing Garcia too many problems if she plays her best tennis.

Prediction: Garcia in 2
