England's title defence of their Cricket World Cup trophy they won on home soil back in 2019 got off to the worst possible start last Thursday, being beaten by nine wickets against New Zealand in the tournament's opening game in Ahmedabad.

Matthew Mott's men trudged to a well under par 282/9 on a flat track in a match that was a repeat of the World Cup final in 2019, with Joe Root top scoring with 77. Jos Buttler looked good for his 43 but nobody else really got going for the defending champions.

The total looked low but potentially defendable, but the back-to-back runners up chased it down with ease, Devon Conway (152*) and Rachin Ravindra (123*) putting on an unbeaten stand of 273 to chase the total down with more than 13 overs to spare.

Tuesday's opponents Bangladesh kicked off their tournament with a comfortable six wicket victory over Afghanistan.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz both starred for the Tigers with the ball, taking 3-30 from eight overs and 3-25 from nine overs respectively which aided Bangladesh bowling out the Afghans for 156.

Mehidy (57) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (59*) then both hit fifties in the chase to ensure Chandika Hathurusingha's side chased down the total with more than 15 overs to spare.

England will head into the match in Dharamshala as favourites but Bangladesh were the victors in the most recent match between the two sides in Chattogram back in March, in which Shakib Al Hasan starred with bat and ball.

The Tigers had lost all of their previous five ODIs against England though, but their previous record in head-to-heads at the Cricket World Cup stands at two wins apiece.
