Powered by a potent aerial attack, the Dolphins were among the league’s most dynamic and exciting teams in 2022.

Coach Mike McDaniel’s crew, though, encountered a roadblock — and it was a formidable one — with the health of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The third-year QB wound up leading the league with a 105.5 quarterback rating but missed five starts, and portions of other games, with concussion issues.

Tagovailoa was sidelined for the team’s wild card playoff game in mid-January, a costly absence as the Dolphins, with seventh-round rookie QB Skylar Thompson at the helm, fell by a field goal to the host Buffalo Bills.

The former Alabama national champion is back with a better understanding of how to avoid further head injuries.

His speedy wideout duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are back as well, ready to terrorize opposing secondaries again. Meanwhile, an up-and-coming Miami defense got a veteran boost in the offseason with the additions of respected coordinator Vic Fangio and All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Ramsey will be out until later in the season due to a training camp knee injury, and the AFC East — let alone the rest of the conference — looks even tougher with the New York Jets trading for four-time league MVP QB Aaron Rodgers.

However, the Dolphins have the talent to spring a Super Bowl surprise.

Like their Sunshine State compatriots, the Jaguars were a pleasant 2022 surprise as they reached the playoffs with a rejuvenated young quarterback and new head coach.

The Jags finished the regular season on a five-game win streak to take the AFC South. QB Trevor Lawrence and Co. then overcame a 27-0 wild card playoff deficit to stun the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30 before falling in the divisional round to the eventual champion Chiefs in Kansas City.

There are concerns about Jacksonville’s offensive line and pass rush, but Lawrence looks like he’s next to join the Patrick Mahomes-Joe Burrow-Josh Allen club of elite AFC QBs. And he has a potent new weapon in WR Calvin Ridley, who served a one-year suspension in 2022.

Coach Doug Pederson used much the same script in guiding the Philadelphia Eagles to a surprise Super Bowl win to cap the 2017 season, and now his up-and-coming Jaguars will try to follow the same path.

The Seahawks aren’t led by a promising young QB, but rather a promising older one in soon-to-be-33-year-old Geno Smith, who caught the league completely by surprise with a career-best 4,282-yard, 30-TD performance last season.

That led to a 9-8 finish and an NFC wild card playoff berth for Pete Carroll’s crew.

The Seahawks have since added two promising first-round draft talents in WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba and CB Devon Witherspoon and beefed up a leaky 2022 defense with the free agent additions of DE Dre’Mont Jones and LB Bobby Wagner.

Unlike the paths of the Dolphins and Jaguars, the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC is much less encumbered. And another surprise step by the Seahawks in 2023 could result in the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy.
