Day five tips at Punchestown on April 29

The Punchestown Festival comes to a close on Saturday afternoon. Two more Grade One races headline another stacked card, with attendees on day five also enjoying several good-quality handicaps and another Cross Country Chase.

Punchestown Festival Day 5 Tips - Saturday 29th April

Race 1 - Donohue Solutions Cross Country Chase Tips

After a decent third in the Perpetual Cup on Tuesday, I wouldn't be surprised to see SUBSET run beyond his odds. Peter Maher's nine-year-old has run well around the Banks a number of times over the past few years and BT Stone takes seven valuable pounds off his back once again.

Race 2 - Colm Quinn BMW Handicap Chase Tips

MY DESIGN has secured plenty of creditable results during a busy campaign. Declan Qually's mare placed behind Shewearsitwell and Teahupoo in Graded hurdles earlier in the season, while also finishing a decent fourth behind Queens Brook here at Punchestown. My Design then jumped nicely as she won on her chasing debut at Clonmel in March, before following the classy Bachasson home at that same venue next three weeks later.

In a battle of the mares, My Design was picked off by Malina Girl in the Ulster National last time out. Queally's eight-year-old seems ready for this further step up in distance and seven-pound claimer Shane O'Callaghan will be high on confidence, having scored aboard Hereditary Rule earlier in the week.

Race 3 - Mares' Champion Hurdle Tips

Race 4 - Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase Tips

Dan Skelton has advertised his prowess as an excellent target trainer throughout this season and a trip to Punchestown has clearly been on the agenda for FLEGMATIK for some time.

All of Flegmatik's best performances have come on good ground around right-handed tracks. Sean Quinlan's mount has won at Carlisle and twice around Kempton during his career and was last seen pushing Our Power all the way to the line in the Grade Three Coral Trophy at Kempton in February. Flegmatik is running off just a two-pound higher mark on Saturday and I would be surprised if Skelton's raider didn't take well to the track at Punchestown.

Race 5 - Champion Four Year Old Hurdle Tips

Lossiemouth has been the best juvenile in the sport this season and Willie Mullins' mare could even offer a bit of value at 4/5. However, NUSRET has certainly been overlooked in this market and, with three paid places available, he'll be my each-way selection.

Joseph O'Brien's charge won his maiden here at Punchestown and went on to strike in the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton. Daryl Jacob then held his mount up too far adrift of a slow pace in the Grade One at Aintree and Nusret's fast finish was only good enough for third. Switching back to a right-handed track is certainly a positive and I wouldn't be surprised to see JJ Slevin's mount at least challenge for the places.

Race 6 - Fitzwilliam Handicap Hurdle Tips

I'm going to back a couple of runners at each-way prices, starting with a horse I've always had a soft spot for, JOYEUX MACHIN. Paul Nolan's six-year-old has only managed to win one of his four starts over hurdles this season and comes to Punchestown on the back of two fairly forgettable displays in the Challow Hurdle and a Grade Two at Fairyhouse.

Paul Nolan, who has had a winner so far this week at Punchestown, will have been pleased to see Joyeux Machin receive what looks to be a lenient opening handicap mark of 133. Good ground will suit, as will this slight step up in trip.

Willie Mullins has a history of winning this handicap with outsiders and there's no doubt that WINTER FOG has been overpriced. Kieran Callaghan's mount bolted up on his stable debut for Willie at Leopardstown over Christmas and sat prominently in the ante-post betting for the County Hurdle on the back of that runaway success.

Winter Fog drifted out to 25/1 before the off at Cheltenham and ran no sort of race. Mullins' nine-year-old is rated four pounds lower on Irish soil and Callaghan's claimer reduces Winter Fog's burden to just 11-5.

Race 7 - Lawlors Hotel Naas Flat Race Tips

We don't have much in the way of form to go on here, but plenty boast excellent pedigrees. Patrick Mullins rides New Bay gelding Sorrentino, with Harry Swan partnering £220k Gigginstown purchase Rainbow Trail for Gordon Elliott.

GOLDINTHEMOUNTAINS is by Harzand and out of a Le Havre mare who won a Listed race on the flat in France. Pat Doyle's four-year-old will be getting weight from his older rivals and Pa King takes a further five pounds off his mount's back.
