Election results: California Props. 26, 27 fail to legalize sports bets
The gaming industry and Native American tribes raised nearly $600 million to support two ballot initiatives to allow sports gambling in California. The money raised more than doubled the amount spent in 2020 by Uber, Lyft and other app-based ride-hailing and delivery services. Both initiatives failed to win a majority. The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office found both initiatives would increase state revenues. However, that revenue could be offset if people spend money on sports betting instead of shopping or buying lottery tickets. California Republican Party opposed both proposals. State Democrats opposed Proposition 27, but were neutral on Proposition 26.
