Ex-Yankees slugger Luke Voit faces uncertain future with Brewers

Luke Voit’s time with the Milwaukee Brewers could be short lived.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that if Voit isn’t on the 40-man roster next Tuesday, he’ll be able to opt out of the deal. If he does make the big league roster, he gets a $2 million base salary, according to Sherman.

Voit only recently joined the Brewers, inking the minor league deal in February. He got the invite to spring training and so far is hitting .400, having racked up six hits in 15 at-bats.

The 32-year-old has bounced around a lot recently, and started the 2022 season with the San Diego Padres before being traded to the Washington Nationals as a part of the Juan Soto deal. But the Nationals non-tendered Voit in November and he was left a free agent.

Voit was with the New York Yankees from 2018 to 2021, and in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he led the majors with 22 home runs and finished ninth in voting for American League MVP.

He was traded to the Padres in March 2022 after a slumping 2021 season that began with a torn meniscus. He hit 11 homers in 68 games that year.
