Carson Wentz Returns As Washington Starter

Head coach Ron Rivera announced that Carson Wentz would return as the starter for the Washington Commanders this week against the Cleveland Browns. This will be the first time Wentz will start under center for the Commanders since the infamous Week 6 Thursday Night slop-fest against the Chicago Bears.

Initially, Taylor Heinicke was just supposed to fill in for Wentz for a few weeks while he recovered from his shoulder injury, but Heinicke temporarily hijacked Wentz’s starting gig as he went 5-3-1 in nine starts.

However, the initial spark Heinicke produced seems to slowly be wearing off as the Commanders haven’t logged a win in nearly a month.

The Commanders are Wentz’s third team in three years. This may very well be his last chance to prove he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL. With a win, he can bring Washington one step closer to solidifying their first playoff berth since 2020.

Can the Browns Play Spoiler?

Although the Browns are not running for an AFC playoff berth, these last two games are crucial in building some momentum for the 2023 season, with Deshaun Watson solidified as the full-time starter in Cleveland.

In Watson’s four starts, he’s struggled mightily, generating a lowly 703 passing yards and just two touchdown passes to three interceptions. But having not played in nearly two years, along with some chemistry and drop issues from receivers, it’s not exactly the most manageable situation for Watson to step into.

Over the next two weeks, Watson and the Browns can play spoiler against two playoff bubble teams in the Commanders and AFC North rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Is Kevin Stefanski Safe?

In his first season, head coach Kevin Stefanski won NFL Coach of the Year, took the Browns to the playoffs for the first time in 18 years, and won their first playoff game in nearly three decades.

However, in the two years since then, the Browns have mostly been a disappointment. This season has been a rocky year – between the Deshaun Watson saga and the offense and defense never seeming to click simultaneously, it has produced mediocre results at best.

Stefanski is most likely safe heading into next season, but there have been rumblings that Stefanski may be on the hot seat. This is something to keep in mind while tuning into the Browns over the next two weeks.
