Frankie Dettori memorabilia goes for massive price

Frankie Dettori, the renowned jockey soon-to-retire, saw his trophy for winning last month’s Oaks aboard Soul Sister become the top-selling item in an online auction of his racing memorabilia.

Over 120 of Dettori’s most coveted trophies and awards from his illustrious career were auctioned at Cheffins, fetching an estimated total of over £75,000.

Bidders from around the world showed keen interest in the unique collection, which included saddles, riding boots, and even scales gifted to him by fellow riding legend Steve Cauthen.

Notably, Dettori’s Oaks trophy sold for £5,000, staying within Britain, while a set of royal blue Godolphin silks found a collector in Japan for £4,600.

The auction also witnessed strong competition for other items, such as the 2014 Emir’s Trophy from Qatar, selling for £3,200, and saddlecloths commemorating Dettori’s 60th and 70th winners at Royal Ascot, both fetching over £2,000.

Part of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to Direct Aid For Africa, a charity founded by the late Barney Curley, who had been an early mentor and longtime friend to Dettori until his passing in 2021.

The decision to auction part of his extensive collection came as Dettori and his wife Catherine plan to downsize their accommodations, as the 52-year-old jockey prepares to retire in November.

Bidding farewell to British racing, Dettori is scheduled to ride at Qipco Champions Day at Ascot on October 21, followed by the Breeders’ Cup in California, and, potentially, the Melbourne Cup on November 7, should a suitable ride be available.

The auction’s success brought delight to the Dettori family, with buyers from all corners of the globe acquiring pieces of sporting history and memorabilia from one of the greatest sports personalities worldwide.
