Glorious Goodwood: Goodwood Cup 2023 tips and odds

The Goodwood Cup is the feature race on Tuesday August 1, day one of Glorious Goodwood. A Group 1 contest over two miles, it forms part of the British Champions Series long-distance category.

Last month’s first two in the Ascot Gold Cup, Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane, are both entered in the race, while the unbeaten three-year-old Gregory is expected to line up at the West Sussex course.

Jockey Frankie Dettori has won this race five times in his career. In what will be his final season in the saddle, he will be bidding for a record-breaking sixth success, and he may have to choose between riding Courage Mon Ami and Gregory this year.

Last year’s winner Kyprios will not be able to defend his crown. Unfortunately for his connections, he remains out of action through injury and leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien is set to be represented by Emily Dickinson and Broome.

Coltrane can call the tune

It has been an excellent 12 months for Coltrane. The stayer has gone from competing in handicap races off a mark of 95 to being one of the leading contenders in Group 1 contests such as the Ascot Gold Cup.

Andrew Balding’s runner won the Coral Marathon at Sandown last season, a Listed contest over 2m. He blew the field away by 10 lengths in what was a striking performance. Later in the campaign, he landed the Group 2 Doncaster Cup and, on his final outing of the year, he was a close second behind Trueshan in the British Champions Long Distance Cup, going down by just a head.

Coltrane ran in this race in 2022, finishing fourth behind Kyprios, Stradivarius and Trueshan. With those three stars set to be absent this year, it is a great chance for the six-year-old to land his opening success at the highest level. He is a much better horse now than he was at this meeting last season.

Balding will have been delighted with the way Coltrane ran in the Ascot Gold Cup at the royal meeting. He finished second and was beaten by less than a length in that 2m 4f contest. A drop back down to 2m will suit the six-time winner in his bid to land the day one highlight.

Courage Mon Ami has point to prove

What was so impressive about Courage Mon Ami’s victory in the Ascot Gold Cup this year was that it was just his fourth career start. Prior to that outing, he had not featured in a group company before.

John and Thady Gosden clearly had a lot of confidence in their gelding to throw him into the deep end at the royal meeting. Many trainers would have bided their time but the Gosden pair knew what their horse was capable of.

Frankie Dettori gave Courage Mon Ami a textbook ride in the Royal Ascot feature. He waited for a gap and once he got it, he knew when to commit in the home straight. His horse had an impressive turn of foot at the business end of the stayers’ contest.

The son of Frankel had recorded wins over 1m 4f and 1m 6f before his success in the Ascot Gold Cup, so this drop back to 2m will not be a problem. There is likely to be much more to come from the lightly raced gelding and this is his chance to prove his victory at the Royal Meeting was no fluke.
