Grand National: The 4 grey horses in 2023 race and their odds

Despite their popularity with racegoers and punters, grey horses have a pretty poor record over the iconic Grand National fences.
Incredibly, just three greys have been first past the post in 175 runnings of the world’s greatest steeplechase, and the first member of the exclusive club, The Lamb, got the job done in 1868 before repeating the feat three years later.
Fast forward 90 years for Nicolaus Silver to defy a 28/1 starting price to become the second grey to score in the Grand National before another lengthy drought to wait for Neptune Collonges to beat Sunnyhillboy in a photo finish in 2012.
The big question is… can another glorious grey gallop their way into the history books on Saturday?
Well, there will be a fab four will be in town (nope, not the Beatles) to take their place in the world famous race.

Coko Beach
Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Harry Cobden Age: 8 Weight: 11st
Coko Beach boasts the fact that he has previously completed the Grand National course, albeit 66l behind last year’s winner Noble Yeats.
A worry is that Coko Beach runs off a 5lb higher mark compared to 12 months ago, but the eight-year-old heads into this renewal in better form having finished comfortably ahead of stablemate Death Duty in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown in February.
Gaillard Du Mesnil
Trainer: Willie Mullins Jockey: Paul Townend Age: 7 Weight: 11st
Gaillard Du Mensil is one of Willie Mullins’ leading contenders and heads to Aintree off the back of last month’s Cheltenham Festival victory in the National Hunt Chase.
A model of consistency having never finished outside the top three in nine starts over fences, Gaillard Du Mesnil is bidding to become the second successive horse aged seven to win the Grand National.
Vanillier
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell Jockey: Sean Flanagan Age: 8 Weight: 10st 6lbs
One of the most intriguing runners in the Grand National, Vanillier has plenty of class but chasing has been far from plain sailing for the 2021 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle hero.
Poor jumping has hampered Vanillier’s efforts over the larger obstacles, but cheekpieces seemed to do the trick when finishing just ½l behind Kemboy when giving away 8lbs in this year’s Bobbyjo Chase – a key trial for this. A potentially smart piece of form.
Eva’s Oskar
Trainer: Tim Vaughan Jockey: Alan Johns Age: 9 Weight: 10st 1lbs
A disappointing fourth place in the Eider Handicap means Eva’s Oskar is rated 1lb higher than her official mark, which has to be a concern for supporters of the three-time chase winner.
The Shirocco gelding boasts smart form in Premier Handicaps over staying trips this season, however, finishing second and first at Cheltenham in November and December respectively.
