For the Lions to win this game, they need to run the ball well and keep it away from the 49ers’ offense. The Lions are fifth in the league in rushing yards per attempt (4.6), and the 49ers are 14th in opponent rushing yards per attempt (4.1). If the Lions keep this game close, Goff’s attempts will be kept to a minimum.

Many expect the 49ers to cruise to victory in this game. If that is the case, then Goff will be throwing for most of the contest. However, a high number of passing attempts won’t necessarily turn into a huge passing day for Goff. The 49ers rank fifth in the NFL in passing yards allowed per attempt (6.4) and lead the league in yards allowed per completion (9.6).

That means the clock will be moving when the 49ers have the ball, shortening the game and offering Goff fewer opportunities to throw.

Goff finished this season with 12 interceptions, which was tied for the seventh-most in the NFL. However, he’s only thrown two in his last six games, and both of those came in the Lions’ 20-19 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.

The 49ers are tied for the most defensive interceptions in football, so this could end up being an awful matchup for Goff. But he and the Lions know the only way they’re going to win is if Goff takes care of the ball. That should lead to a game plan that features easier passes for Goff and a heavier reliance on the run.
