The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Director in charge of Youth Development Kikechi Kombo believes he has accomplished enough targets that warrants his re-election in the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for Wednesday at the RFUEA grounds.

Speaking on Saturday at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation ( KBC), the founder of Comras RFC appealed to the  affiliates of the game in the country to consider him for the second term even as he seeks to continue advocating for the overall development of the sport.

"When we got elected into the office covid-19 pandemic struck and to some extent paralysed our ambition but we soldiered on.Initiated Damu Pevu program which has seen robust growth of the game amongst teens who form an integral part of the sport" he said.

"To retain and be competitive globally, you have to train from a very young age and most of our players start playing rugby in their teenage years and that puts us at a competitive disadvantage. As a Union, we have ensured that rugby being a mass sport is available to everyone in this country so that we build on the popularity and success we’ve built in the history of KRU,” added the long serving rugby stakeholder

Kombo was  named the school coach of the year in 2018  after leading debutantes Muhuri Muchiri  to East Africa glory the previous year following their victory against  Uganda’s Jinja Secondary School 14-7 in the rugby sevens final during the regional championship held in Gulu,Uganda.

He has reiterated his commitment of continue working with Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) in line with wholistic nature of the Kenya curriculum activities which are a definite pathway involving talent development and enhancement.

"Last year little known Koyonzo Boys Secondary School were crowned the national secondary schools’ rugby sevens champions after beating  fellow Western Region representatives Butula High School. This tells of the programs we've put in place in partnership with KSSSA and we'll keep collaborating in beefing up our performance not only regionally but also on the continental scene" remarked Kombo

He is facing opposition from among others former Kenyan  International and National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) player representative Humphrey Kayange and World Rugby Women’s Executive Leadership Scholarship recipient Peris Mukoko.

The polls will be overseen  by former Rugby patrons chairman Aggrey Chabeda who chairs the Independent Electoral Board.

The experienced rugby administrator will conduct the elections alongside Sadik Makii (Kenya Cup clubs representative), Auka Gecheo (Championship clubs representative), Faith Basiye (Women’s rugby representative) and sports lawyer Sarah Ochwada (KRU Board representative).
