Most (and least) profitable NHL teams to bet on this season

We have less than two month left in the NHL regular season, which means we have plenty of data and numbers to look at before we place our bets and determine which teams are contenders.

One thing we can look at is how profitable each team has been to bet on this season. Remember, this doesn’t always correlate with a teams overall record. If a good teams performs about as well as oddsmakers expect, they may not be nearly as profitable as you’d think.

That’s why sports betting isn’t as easy as betting on the good teams and betting against the bad teams.

So, with that being said, let’s take a look at the top 10 most profitable teams to bet on this NHL season. All figures below are based on $100 moneyline bets.

Most profitable NHL teams to bet on

  1. Bruins +$1,215
  2. Devils +$963
  3. Kraken +$834
  4. Jets +$816
  5. Canadiens +$540
  6. Sabres +$507
  7. Hurricanes +$443
  8. Coyotes +$343
  9. Kings +$335
  10. Golden Knights +$182

Remember how I said that sports betting isn’t always as easy as just betting on the good teams? Well, the Bruins seem to be the exception to that rule. Not only are they the frontrunner for the Presidents Trophy, but they’re also the most profitable team to bet on in the NHL. If you bet $100 on them in every game this season, you’d be up a profit of $1,215.

But, there are also teams that do follow that rule. For example, the Montreal Canadiens, who are in second last place in the Eastern Conference, are the fifth most profitable team to bet on. Sure, they might only have 23 wins on the season, but when they win they almost always cash as big underdogs.

Now, let’s take a look at the least profitable NHL teams to bet on this season.

Least profitable NHL teams to bet on

  1. Sharks -$1,413
  2. Flames -$1,392
  3. Ducks -$1,387
  4. Penguins -$1,192
  5. Panthers -$1,182
  6. Blue Jackets -$801
  7. Wild -$689
  8. Capitals -$652
  9. Stars -$530
  10. Blackhawks -$502

The teams who top the list are generally teams who ended up being the most disappointing in the NHL. Those with high expectations, both from fans and oddsmakers, that have failed to live up to their potential so far this season.

That’s certainly the case for the Flames, Penguins, and Panthers who are three of the five least profitable teams to bet on this season, losing moneyline bettors over $1,000 on the year.

I wouldn’t recommend blindly betting on teams based on the above numbers, but it’s interesting to consider them and keep them in mind as we entire the final stretch of the regular season.
