Newmarket best bet: Conditions set up for a bold bid from Lady Alara

13:30 Newmarket: British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (1 mile 2 furlongs)

Newmarket’s straight, galloping 10 furlongs present a unique set of conditions which do not suit all runners, but Lady Alara looks a prime candidate to relish the test, with her latest two runs providing plenty of clues.

On her return from a short break last month, she produced a career-best performance to win a Class 2 fillies’ handicap over Ascot’s straight mile where the ground was good-firm.

Making almost all of the running, she shrugged off challenges and kept galloping very strongly to beat the nearest of ten rivals by a couple of lengths.

A fortnight later, Lady Alara came to this venue to contest another fillies’ handicap, again over a straight mile and while she couldn’t quite follow-up her Ascot win off six pounds higher she ran at least as well to finish runner-up of 10 behind the race favourite, Shining Jewel, who is now rated 98 (higher than any of today’s opposition).

After leading in the early stages but then becoming temporarily outpaced going into the dip and losing her place, Lady Alara rallied particularly well up the finishing hill to regain second place, re-passing the third, fourth and fifth in the process, in the manner of a filly who is ready for 10 furlongs under these conditions.

Lady Alara has a prominent racing style that is well-suited to this venue and after already being on a progressive curve since returning from her last break, she has the potential to progress further under these conditions and land another Class 2 success.

Charles Hills won this race with a 3yo a few seasons ago and he can repeat the feat with Lady Alara.

Of the others, the Roger Varian / David Egan team won this prize last season with the three-year-old, Al Husn, and this time they are represented by Red Danielle, who looks very likely to put up a bold showing following her confidence-boosting win at Yarmouth last time out.

She was expected to win that small-field novices’ event and did so at a canter, while her previous run came in a much tougher race at Newbury where she finished runner-up of 13 in a Class 2 fillies’ novices event over this distance.

She was beaten only half a length with the front pair well clear and the winner was the Gosden-trained Sweet Memories, who has since finished runner-up Group 3 company at this track.

That classy rival is now rated 105, so Red Danielle, who ran her close on level terms, could be very nicely-treated off just 90 for this handicap debut.
