Pittsburgh Penguins lost the first game of a back-to-back 5-1. Detroit Red Wings won the previous game 7-4 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game is the season's first between the two Eastern Conference teams.

The Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils play each other on the second night of a back-to-back. The Devils are struggling in the standings and are down in Metropolitan Division. Boston won the first game of the season 4-3. The Bruins appeared to shake their holiday rust off in their last game against Ottawa.

Linus Ullmark will start for the Bruins. Vitek Vanecek will play for New Jersey. David Pastrnak is looking to get back on the score sheet after his 10-game point streak ended against the Senators. Jack Hughes has emerged as a superstar for Devils this season.
