Physical Bruins forward claimed by Flames after getting waived

A.J. Greer was part of the final round of waivers over the weekend but he won’t be reporting to Providence. The bottom-six forward was claimed by the Calgary Flames on Monday afternoon.

The 26-year-old carved out a role for himself on the Bruins roster around this time last year. And even though he played in four preseason games and he didn’t really regress during training camp, a move to the waiver wire still happened.

But after the Bruins brought back Milan Lucic on a one-year deal in the offseason, it became an uphill battle for Greer to earn a roster spot.

Now, Greer takes Lucic’s old spot with the Flames while Lucic replaces him on the Bruins.

Greer now joins a Flames team who are looking to rebound from a disappointing 2022-23 season that ended with Calgary firing coach Daryl Sutter. The Flames finished38-27-17 in the Western Conference.

The Bruins waiving Greer likely paves the way for Johnny Beecher to make the team as a fourth-line forward, who’s been knocking on the door of an NHL debut. And after a strong camp, it appears Beecher will get that shot.

NHL rosters have to be finalized on Monday with the 2023-24 season officially beginning Tuesday.
