The New York Rangers are the best team in hockey as we enter the last week of November. They’re 15-3-1 on the season and have a good chance to add another win to their total as they host the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Buffalo is a disappointing 9-10-2 to start the season despite taking a step forward last year. NHL odds have pegged the home side as a massive favorite to no one's surprise.

The New York Rangers have been getting contributions from up and down the lineup during their hot start to the year. Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider are still leading the way, but former first-overall pick Alexis Lafreniere is finally having a breakout season.

Through his first three NHL seasons, Lafreniere put up 91 points in 216 games (0.42 points per game). This season, however, the youngster already has 12 points (eight goals) in 19 games — 0.63 points per game.

Lafreniere heated up in the middle of October with 10 points (six goals) from October 21 to November 12. He's since gone a bit cold with just one goal in his last five games. However, Lafreniere's confidence is still showing.

He's fired 16 shots on goal in those past five games, including six against the Penguins and four on Saturday against Boston.

Lafreniere has not only been taking a lot of shots on goal but shot attempts in general as well. He had five shot attempts against the Bruins, seven in Pittsburgh, and six in Dallas. There was a goose egg mixed in there in Philadelphia, but that’s an extreme outlier over the past several games.

The young forward is making the most of his chance in the top six with Panarin and Vincent Trocheck on the second line. Those two talented veterans can get him the puck and he's been doing the rest. Back Lafreniere to keep firing shots on net against a struggling Buffalo Sabres team.

Rangers to score in first period

New York ran up the score on Saturday against the Bruins in a 7-4 win after a 3-1 victory in Philadelphia the day prior. The Blueshirts have also covered the spread in more than a few home games. They've won by at least two goals in three of their last contests at Madison Square Garden.

On the other side, the Sabres are coming off a 7-2 loss in Detroit and have lost by at least two goals in three of their last five defeats.

Finally, I'm taking the Rangers to score in the first period. They've scored 23 first-period goals in 19 games this season while Buffalo has allowed the second-most goals in the first period (27) in the league.

Over the last 10 games, New York has 16 first-period goals while the Sabres have allowed 13.

Sabres vs Rangers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Rangers are huge home favorites against the Sabres. They opened around -215 but are now as high as -225 and -230 at most books. On the other side, Buffalo is up to as high as +188 (FanDuel) after opening at +180.

The total opened at 6.5 with the Under heavily favored and has since moved down to six at most books. You can still get Over 6.5 (+100) and Under 6.5 (-122) at FanDuel.

I'd go with the Rangers and the Under tonight. New York is terrific at home and both of these teams tend to be on the lower-scoring side of things this season.
