Officials say a New Jersey power outage a week ago was due to an unlikely culprit — a fish. Sayreville police say a fish was found on a transformer after the Aug. 12 outage, and they suspect a bird dropped it. They dubbed the fish Gilligan and called him “a hard working family man.” Jersey Central Power and Light Company spokesperson Chris Hoenig said animals are a common cause of power outages but they're usually squirrels — “fish are not on the list of frequent offenders.” He said the area has a lot of ospreys, which were on the state’s endangered species list until less than a decade ago.

Lyon has two losses and no points to start the French league after falling to Montpellier 4-1. Lyon striker and goal-scorer Lacazette was so overwhelmed with frustration that he was sent off in the 80th minute for a bad foul on Teji Savanier. Montpellier earned its first win after drawing with Le Havre 2-2 on the opening weekend. The lack of quality in Lyon was glaring as the host struggled to create chances and was let down by poor defending. Lyon desperately needs reinforcements to contend for European spots but severe financial contraints imposed by the league’s financial watchdog have hampered the club’s recruitment efforts this summer.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center got even busier Saturday now looking at five weather systems with potential to form into the year’s next tropical depression or storm including one that will bring rain as it moves across South Florida this weekend.

Pape Matar Sarr scored early in the second half and Lisandro Martinez added an own goal to give Tottenham a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the English Premier League. It was just the kind of result manager Ange Postecoglou needed in his first home game to build a sense of belief as the club moves on from the departure of Kane to Bayern Munich. Sarr put Spurs ahead after Dejan Kulusevski’s low cross was deflected into the path of the midfielder, who slotted it into the roof of the net from close range. Spurs doubled their lead with a bit of fortune as substitute Ivan Perisic sent a low cross into the area that deflected in off Martinez.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez in the 15-day injured list with a strained right hamstring. Manager Rob Thomson said the team would return to a five-man rotation while Suárez was sidelined. Suarez, whose injured list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, said he felt fine during pregame work Wednesday in Toronto before feeling soreness. He underwent an MRI exam Friday, which he said revealed a grade 1 strain. Suárez is 2-6 with a 3.88 ERA in 17 starts. Philadelphia recalled right-hander Andrew Bellatti from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his active roster spot. Bellatti had a 5.06 ERA in 19 appearances with the Phillies earlier this season.

A fast-moving wildfire in eastern Washington state has destroyed at least 185 structures, closed a major highway and left one person dead. The blaze started on the west side of Medical Lake, a town west of Spokane, at about 12:30 p.m. Friday. That is according to a Washington State Department of Natural Resources spokesperson. The fire grew to 14.8 square miles by Saturday morning, with zero containment. The burned structures were a mixture of homes and outbuildings. Spokesperson Isabelle Hoygaard said Saturday evacuations were ordered for the town as winds blew the flames south. It burned through the south side of the town and then jumped Interstate 90 Friday night, forcing its closure. It remained closed in both directions Saturday.

England’s preparations for the Rugby World Cup have been plunged into further chaos after Billy Vunipola was red-carded for a dangerous tackle in a 29-10 loss to top-ranked Ireland in a warmup match illuminated by a stunning late try by Keith Earls. Vunipola is the only specialist No. 8 in England’s World Cup squad. He saw his yellow card upgraded to a red by the newly introduced bunker review system after smashing his right shoulder into the face of Ireland prop Andrew Porter in the 53rd minute at Lansdowne Road. A disciplinary panel will determine the length of Vunipola’s suspension but he is in danger of missing the start of the World Cup. So is captain Owen Farrell, who missed the match in Dublin amid his own disciplinary process.

The Saints say Graham has been evaluated by team doctor John Amoss and released from a hospital on Saturday morning. He was back with the team as it prepared for a preseason game on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Thousands more residents of Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands have fled their homes as a wildfire that authorities deemed “out of control” raged on for a fourth day. Emergency services for the Canary Islands says the number of evacuees “could surpass 26,000” according to provisional calculations based on the island’s census. Spain is setting new heat records this year amid a prolonged drought that has authorities on alert for wildfires.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles asked for the reduction after a Cruise vehicle without a human driver collided with an unspecified emergency vehicle on Thursday. The DMV said Cruise will have no more than 50 driverless vehicles in operation during the day and 150 in operation at night. The development comes just over a week after regulators allowed Cruise and Google spinoff Waymo to operate autonomous robotaxis throughout San Francisco at all hours. Cruise said its vehicle identified the emergency vehicle and braked at an intersection with limited visibility. But it couldn't avoid a crash.
