Stars vs Red Wings Prediction, Preview, Odds and Picks April 10

The Dallas Stars are on a roll and need to keep winning if they are to wrest the top spot in the division from the Colorado Avalanche. Dallas has won five of its last six games with that lone loss against Colorado. But heading to Detroit, the Stars face a team they have consistently beaten, hence their short NHL lines.

Stars Defense Elite on the Road

If the Dallas Stars continue to play on the road in the playoffs the way they do now, the team should be a shrewd NHL pick to come out of the West. Dallas is not only 23-16 (23-11-5) on the road but has one of the best defenses: It allows just 2.54 goals per game. The goaltending is a big reason why.

Jake Oettinger and Scott Wedgewood have combined for a whopping 93.5 save percentage (SV%) on 5-on-5 as a visitor. But the Stars would not have this kind of success without Dallas’s sharp two-way play. The Stars also allow some of the fewest scoring chances (26.8 per 60 minutes, fifth-fewest) in the league.

It would take a Stanley Cup favorite like Colorado to beat Dallas when it plays like this. And still, Alexandar Georgiev was just one save better than Oettinger in their last matchup. If the goaltending can hold down the fort, it will be up to the skaters to come through in the clutch. Dallas is just 12-20 in one-goal games and that includes 14 losses in overtime/shootout.

Red Wings Need Better Goaltending

On the flip side, the Detroit Red Wings can’t get out of the purgatory of the Atlantic Division due to some porous goaltending. While they are not entirely to blame, it’s hard to defend a Detroit’s trio that has combined for an 89.6 SV% and -20.6 goals saved above average. That won’t cut it, especially when Detroit’s skaters have improved.

Detroit, which used to suffer on special teams, has bumped it up to being decent units this season. Detroit is actually +5 on the power-play goal differential. This is part of having had 21 more opportunities than its opponents. But it’s also a big step up from -22 last season.

But if Detroit is to be worth betting on online, one of the goalies will need to step up, or the team will need to channel its inner Dallas and play solid 5-on-5 hockey. If Detroit can do that, it can finally beat Dallas, which would be the first time on the NHL news in awhile.
