Super Sprint Stakes predictions: Strong favourite offers Super value Relief

- Selection: Rosario
- Alternative: Ziggy's Phoenix

It is a hugely busy day of racing action in Britain and Ireland on Saturday, with eight meetings scheduled, and Newbury is front and centre as they stage their Super Sprint card.

The Super Sprint is a £250,000 sales race, in which the weights are determined by the purchase price of each entry rather than official ratings - ensuring it offers connections of horses acquired relatively cheaply to land a sizeable pot, with the maximum purchase price being £65,000.

Our racing expert has been looking at the Super Sprint, which goes to post at 3.35pm on Saturday afternoon, and has two selections to keep in mind for the Newbury feature.

Relief Rally sets the standard

Five of the last 10 winners of the Super Sprint were fillies and Relief Rally is a warm order at 11/8 with LiveScore Bet following her close second to the US-trained Crimson Advocate in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

Her trainer William Haggas has won this before with Superstar Leo (2000) and Jargelle (2008) and will be hoping this promising filly can scratch a 15-year itch for him now.

She is already rated 106 after winning her first two races at Windsor and Salisbury before losing out in the Queen Mary at Ascot in a head bobber.

She carries 9st here and has an excellent chance on paper.

Last year's beaten favourite Maria Branwell was also a warm order on the back of a placed showing in the Queen Mary but could only finish eighth in this always-competitive contest and, as she was 12 months ago, Relief Rally is under threat from potential improvers aimed at this prize.

Before her excellent effort at the royal meeting, Relief Rally won on her debut at Windsor and then at Salisbury when beating the re-opposing Juniper Berries by a length-and-three-quarters.

That rival is trained by Eve Johnson-Houghton, who can also call upon Bobsleigh, a three-length sixth behind River Tiber in the Coventry Stakes last time, as part of a strong dual challenge.

Haggas suggested this week that the Super Sprint has 'been on our radar for a while' and Relief Rally looks a very strong favourite.

Rosario can step up for Teal

With the favourite so strong in the market, there is lot of value knocking around elsewhere in this Newbury event and Roger Teal's debut winner ROSARIO could be one that defies his inexperience to run a big race.

A son of Harry Angel, he is bred for speed and made the perfect start to his career when scoring at Ffos Las (5f, good) four weeks ago this weekend.

He was always handily placed in that contest and had the running rail to aid him in starting his challenge with over a furlong to run.

Despite ceding experience to some of his rivals, he was professional in the closing stages and won nicely.

That form was franked by the runner-up coming out and scoring on his next start for Archie Watson.

Gelded ahead of his debut, he was Teal's first two-year-old winner of the season and there is an excellent chance he will improve markedly for that outing.

With 8st 11lb, George Rooke's partner is a solid contender.

Phoenix could rise for Hannon

Richard Hannon has won this race four times since 2014 and the Marlborough trainer comes with a seven-strong hand yet again in his quest to make it four wins in six years.

ZIGGY'S PHOENIX is a Kodiac filly that could have something to offer for Hannon's team here at a big price, with Jim Crowley booked to ride.

She won the Lily Agnes at Chester (5f, soft) in May, justifying favouritism, and has contested strong Listed races at Chantilly and Newmarket in two of three starts since.

She was well held last time at Headquarters but that track may not have played to her strengths and the return to five furlongs at this point in her career looks a plus.

She needs a decent step forward now, but given the excellent record of her trainer - and fillies - in this contest, it might be worth trusting her to leap forward at generous odds with FOUR places for each-way terms.
