What to Do at Plainridge Park Casino (Beyond Sports Betting)

Massachusetts sports betting is set to launch at 10 a.m. on Jan. 31. All three casinos in the Bay State will be offering retail wagering options, and that includes Plainridge Park Casino.

Dubbed “Your Hometown Casino,” Plainridge is the only casino in Massachusetts with a live harness-racing track. The open casino floor features over 1,200 slots, video poker, electronic table games, and much more.

If you’re planning a visit to Plainridge Park Casino when its Barstool Sportsbook Massachusetts retail spot opens, here is a list of interesting things to do other than sports wagering.

Horse Racing

Plainridge Park Casino offers live racing between April and November each year. Harness racing pits standardbred horses against one another, and they each pull a manned cart behind them called a sulky. The pace at which harness horses can run is controlled, and these races are often called “trotting” races because of the restriction.

Harness racing features more strategy on the part of the jockeys than typical thoroughbred racing. Positioning throughout the race is as important as speed.

If you are a fan of horse racing, this is a must-do activity at Plainridge Park, regardless if you have any money on the line.

Slots, Electronic Table Games, Video Poker

Plainridge Park is a slots-only facility with harness racing. However, there still are plenty of games to play.

Plainridge Park has more than 1,200 slot machines. Reel-based and digital games are available, and there are several machines with progressive jackpots. Denominations range anywhere from pennies per spin all the way to $100.

Because Plainridge is not a full-fledged casino, it cannot offer the live version of classic games like blackjack, roulette, or craps.

However, it can offer electronic table games. These machines allow several players to sit in on the same game. They operate games exactly as a live dealer would. Although the bulk of the game’s flow will occur through computer animation, some options might have automated dice or roulette wheels in the middle of the console to add an element of realism. These games tend to offer minimum bets that are lower than a live version of the game.

Live Entertainment

If you need a break from the sportsbook or the slots, then Plainridge Park has you covered with some of the best live entertainment you’ll find in Massachusetts. There’s live music, stand-up comedy, nationally renowned tribute bands, and more at Revolution Lounge, The Loft, and The Patio.

All shows at Revolution Lounge are free and feature the area’s best live bands and DJs. You don’t need a ticket or a reservation either. Shows run Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to midnight. Whether you want to dance the night away or relax with friends, Revolution Lounge is a great place to unwind.

The Loft features great live music, as well as some awesome stand-up comedy. Meanwhile, another venue will be available for customers once the weather warms up. Starting May 28, The Patio will deliver live music every Friday and Saturday from 7-9 p.m. During the summer months, there will be cornhole and signature brews patrons can enjoy during a fun night out.

Blue-Collar Dining Experience

Plainridge Park has a reputation as being the “everyman’s” casino of Massachusetts. So, while there are plenty of food and entertainment options, for the most part, they are more blue-collar than at the casinos in Springfield and Everett.

Slack’s Oyster Bar & Grill is the closest thing to a luxury restaurant at Plainridge. You can enjoy a nice date night in an intimate dining area or cocktails with friends at the bar featuring great local microbrews, wine selection, and specialty cocktails for every season.

You’ll also find four great quick-serve and casual dining options in Plainridge Park’s food court, all within easy walking distance of the casino floor.
