The 2024 Grand National at Aintree Racecourse is almost here.

The four-and-a-half mile steeplechase is a spectacle that draws in 150,000 spectators at Aintree, as well as an estimated global TV audience of 600 million from over 140 countries. Tickets for the 2024 Grand National are currently on sale here.

The racing kicks off on Thursday, April 11 with the opening day, followed by Ladies Day on Friday. Then, the biggest race of the year starts at a new time of 4pm on Saturday, April 13 2024, marking the highlight of Grand National Day.

When is the Grand National?

Aintree's three-day Grand National Festival this year takes place from Thursday, April 11 to Saturday, April 13.

The main event, the Grand National itself, happens on Saturday afternoon.

What time does the Grand National start in 2024?

The Grand National runners will start their race at 4pm on Saturday, April 13.

Previously, the Grand National began at 5.15pm. The new start time is one of five changes introduced for this year's edition to protect the welfare of racehorses and jockeys.

Where is the Grand National held?

The Grand National Festival takes place at Aintree Racecourse, which is just a short distance from Liverpool. Aintree Racecourse has been the home of the Grand National Festival since 1839.

How many horses run in the Grand National in 2024?

For 2024, the total number of horses in the Grand National has been cut from 40 to 34, to reduce the risk of incidents during the race. The Chief Executive of the Jockey Club said the Grand National is many fans' entry point into horseracing and the changes are vital to preserve the future of the sport.

When are the horses for the Grand National announced?

Every February, all the runners in the race are given running weights. Then, on the Thursday of the Grand National, at 10am, the top 34 runners in the weights that haven't been withdrawn are confirmed as the runners for the Grand National.

How long does Aintree race last?

The Grand National will take approximately 10 minutes to finish, with the fastest Grand National time being recorded by Mr Frisk in 1990 who finished the course in just under nine minutes.

In total, there are 16 fences on the Grand National course. Jockeys and horses have to jump over 14 of them twice during the four mile, two and a half furlong race.

This is the longest Jump racing distance in the UK.

What is the Grand National prize money?

The prize money for the Grand National has gone up over the years, reaching a massive £1m in 2014. The lucky winner of the Grand National will get a whopping £561,300 from that prize pot, but only the top ten finishers will get any money.

The second-place horse will get £211,100, while the third-place horse will bag £105,500.
