Who Are The 94 Contenders This Year?

It’s that time of year again, as the official list of 2024 Grand National entries was revealed today.

As we gear up for the 176th renewal of the great race, which will be held at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday, April 13th 2024 at 4pm, it all starts here.

For 2024, 94 horses have been given the green light, and unsurprisingly, Corach Rambler is included on that list.

Trained by Lucinda Russell, Corach Rambler looks set to return to retain his crown.

Now ten years old and still in excellent form, can he run away with it again in 2024? Or will his trip to the Cheltenham Gold Cup scupper his chances?

Of the 94 entries, 61 are trained in Ireland, which is a new record for the race.

Gold Cup winner Minella Indo is a big name from Henry De Bromhead. So too, is I Am Maximus from Willie Mullins and last year’s runner-up, Vanillier, from Gavin Cromwell.

Gordon Elliott Entries

Would it even be the Grand National if Gordon Elliott didn’t absolutely dominate the entries?

One of Ireland’s most successful trainers, he consistently enters a huge number of potential runners into the Grand National. Last season, it was 21 runners; this year, he’s gone even further and entered 26.

That is a whopping 27.6% of all entries. Is it ridiculous? Yes. But just bear in mind that from 21 last year, only five actually made the final line-up.

The problem this year is that there are only 34 places at the starting tape, so he could end up holding quite the hand going into the race.

Not only does he have Galvin in the mix, but he also has serious contenders in Gevrey and Fury Road, both of whom have significant wins under their belt.

Willie Mullins 2024 Grand National Entries

No slouch when it comes to training winners, Willie Mullins has 13 entries for 2024, though Gaillard Du Mesnil, last year’s third-place finisher, is not one of them.

I Am Maximus and Capodanno are currently his best priced in the ante-post betting markets, both on 20/1.

Again, like Gordon Elliott, he only ran five of them last year, so it’ll be interesting over the next few weeks to see which get a shot at the race and which either don’t make the cut or are withdrawn at the scratching stages.

Other Notable Entries

Mister Coffey from Nicky Henderson is his back again for 2024, and while he was the trainer’s only entry last year, this time around, he has a couple of stablemates in the mix.

Having never won the race, Henderson will be hoping for a miracle from one of his chasers, with Dusart and Fantastic Lady also potential runners.

Nassalam, from trainer Gary Moore is the highest rated UK entry. At just seven years old, not only did he win the Welsh Grand National trial, but just over two weeks later, he went back to Chepstow to win the Welsh Grand National itself.

And he did it by a staggering 34 lengths. If that doesn’t scream Grand National 2024 contender, I don’t know what does!

The next stage is now the weights, which will be announced in two weeks’ time.

The BHA Handicapper doesn’t have to follow the Irish ratings and has the freedom to rate these horses independently when it comes to the allocation of weights.

So it will be interesting to see how the markets shape up when they are revealed.

Prominent Owners

Two of the biggest owners in National Hunt Racing, in terms of numbers, are JP McManus and Gigginstown.

This year JP McManus has entered five runners as an owner, so it looks like another strong hand for the gold and green hoops.

Three are with Willie Mullins: Capodanno, I Am Maximus and Janidil. Limerick Lace is with Gavin Cromwell, and Fakir D’oudairies is with Joseph O’Brien.

Gigginstown has 11 entries, all of them trained by Gordon Elliott. They include Coko Beach, Conflated, and Delta Work.
