Young Boys vs. Man City Odds, Predictions & Betting Tips

Young Boys and Manchester City face one another for the very first time on Wednesday night at Stadion Wankdorf. Tom Winch has returned to provide us with his best bets for the Champions League fixture.

Pep Guardiola’s side are massive favourites in Switzerland as you’d expect, sitting as short as 1/5 with a number of betting sites.

The hosts are the current champions back home and are in the midst of a domestic title race once again this campaign.

When playing at home, they’re usually a tough side to beat and have tasted defeat just once in 2023. Leipzig were victorious here on the opening match day, having dominated the statistics (23 shots & 2.67xG).

Young Boys vs Man City Tips

Manchester City’s away record in 2023 is pretty remarkable and one I didn’t even have much of an idea about. They’ve played 22 away games this calendar year, against teams who ply their trade in the top flight in any competition and have conceded in 18 matches from 22. You would’ve never guessed that. They’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their previous six away days.

There’s no doubt that the Swiss Super League comes nowhere near the level of the Premier League. Man City are the current holder of this competition and it’s clear why they’re priced as almighty favourites. However, the hosts may cause some problems, just like they usually seem to do when playing at home.

It was the first time that Young Boys failed to score at home since August 2022 over the weekend in their top-of-the-table clash. In 22/23 they netted 54 times in 18 home games, and 41 the year before. They’ve scored in both Champions League matches this campaign and bagged in all three home games in 21/22 against Villarreal, Atalanta and Man United.

Cheikh Niasse is a usual starter in the Young Boys midfield. He’s typically the most defensive player in his side and puts himself about. He committed three fouls here against Leipzig and picked up a card against Red Star Belgrade in the following round. He’s a big price to commit two or more fouls on Wednesday night, with the same selection odds-on elsewhere.

The man from Senegal has committed 2,4,1,2,0,3 fouls in his last six starts and should be right against it when it comes to the number of technical players that City have amongst their ranks. Across his time at Young Boys, Cheikh Niasse has been cautioned 12 times in the league; that’s a card every 228 minutes on average.

Young Boys need a positive result here or they could begin to lose touch with City and Leipzig, who you’d expect to cruise through the group with relative ease. Niasse will need a big performance in the middle of the park. He’ll have his work cut out, which will hopefully lead to him committing some fouls.
