2022 NFL Head Coach Firings, Tracking Offseason Coaching Carousel

Matt Rhule was fired as Carolina Panthers head coach after the team's latest loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Rhules is the first coach fired in 2022. There were 10 head coaching changes from 2021 to 2022, so this is only the beginning.

Six of the 10 new NFL head coaches in 2022 have an offensive background. Super Bowl-winning head coach Sean McVay is the most successful offensive coach in the NFL.

Sean Payton retired from the Saints last season. He won Super Bowl XLIV in 2010.

Duce Staley is an assistant head coach with the Lions. He was one of the stars of "Hard Knocks" this season.

Liam Coen is the Rams offensive coordinator. He's in his first year in the job.

Todd Bowles, Dennis Allen, Lovie Smith and Matt Eberflus are the current defensive coaches in the NFL. The last three Super Bowl-winning coaches were offensive-minded.

DeMeco Ryans is the defensive coordinator of the 49ers. Ryan was a finalist for the Vikings job last year.

Brian Flores is a former Dolphins head coach. He filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL. Flores went 24-25 with Miami despite having limited talent on the roster.

Jerod Mayo has been on the New England Patriots defensive staff since 2019. He has interviewed for multiple head coaching positions.
