2022 World Cup preview: Group B

2022 World Cup is just six days away. Philly Sports Network is previewing the eight groups and 32 nations competing to be champions of the world. Group B has European giant England, 20th-ranked Iran, the forever-underdogs USA and a nation that hasn't been at the World Cups in 68 years, Wales.

England, Iran, USA and Wales are in Group B. England is the favorite to win the group. USA, Ireland and Welsh teams are evenly matched. The winner of the Group will be the team that performs best against the other teams.

England is the top-ranked team in Group B and has the third-best odds to top a group at the World Cup at 63.02%. They made the semifinals in the 2018 edition of the tournament. In their last six matches, England has drawn three times and lost three. They look like a shell of their team that went through European qualifying. England scored 39 goals and let in only three in qualifying, and if they can put those performances together at this World cup, they should top the group.

Iran has never progressed out of a group-stage at the men's World Cup. Iran has been to six World Cups before 2022 and each time they failed to finish in the top two of their group. In World cup qualifying, Iran allowed just four goals in 10 matches. They are hoping their defensive record will carry them out in Group B.

The United States is back at the men's World Cup after not making the 2018 iteration of the tournament. The USMNT made it through CONCACAF qualifying as the third place team behind Canada and Mexico. They play Wales on the second day of this tournament and need to win to have any chance of making it to the knockout rounds.

Wales is back in the World Cup for the first time since 1958. They made it to the semifinals of Euro 2016 and the knockout round of the 2020 Euros. Wales takes on USA on the second day of this tournament. If they can get points from this match, they could make it through to knockout rounds.
