2023 Belmont Derby morning-line odds, picks, post time: Racing insider offers betting strategy for Saturday's race

The best American 3-year-old turf horses meet the best from Europe on Saturday when the starting gate opens in the 2023 Belmont Derby at Belmont Park outside New York City. The Foxes, an Irish-bred who has raced entirely in Great Britain, has won two Group 2 races in his career and has been installed as the lukewarm 7-2 morning-line favorite in the 2023 Belmont Derby odds. He is followed on the morning line by three U.S.-based horses: Far Bridge (4-1), Webslinger (9-2) and Kalik (5-1). Post time for the $750,000 race is 5:49 p.m. ET.

A member of the Beyer Speed Figure-making team who is based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Weir is a two-time qualifier for the prestigious National Horseplayers Championship in Las Vegas. Last year he was red-hot in the Triple Crown prep races, hitting the superfecta in the Blue Grass Stakes for $1,678 and exactas in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and Tampa Bay Derby. He also hit the 19-1 winner of the Man o' War Stakes, the trifecta in the Pegasus World Cup, the superfecta in the Met Mile and multiple Pick 4s.

In April of this year, he hit a Pick 4 at Gulfstream Park for $641, the exacta in the Florida Derby, a Pick 5 at Keeneland and the exacta in the Lexington Stakes. He smashed the trifecta in the Belmont Stakes for $532.96, and later in June he crushed a Pick 4 at Belmont for $555. Those are just some of his scores this year.

One surprise: Weir's top pick is notThe Foxes, even though he is the 7-2 morning-line favorite. "The trainer was reportedly concerned about the current heat wave on the East Coast, so it's worth looking if The Foxes is washed out prior to the race," Weir told SportsLine.
