Long-distance turf racing is on tap for the Sunday afternoon feature at Saratoga with the running of the (G2) Bowling Green Stakes. The race is open to horses age four and older, and they’ll be going 1 3/8 miles on the Saratoga inner turf course.

The 2023 Bowling Green has drawn a full field of 10 starters, representing an international cast of horses from the US, Great Britain, Ireland and Canada.

There’s a big favourite in the field and lots of betting value throughout the gate.

2023 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Rebel’s Romance Race Odds: 8-5

The winner of the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf in course-record time last November at Keeneland, Rebel’s Romance is an Irish-bred with a pair of Group 1 victories in Germany. He has also posted stakes wins in the UK and the Middle East and is an all-or-nothing type, with nine wins and four off-the-board finishes in 13 lifetime starts.

This will be only his second start of 2023, and he was last seen finishing seventh in the Dubai Sheema Classic in March.

He’s trained by UK-based Charles Appleby, while jockey Richard Mullen comes across the pond to ride..

2023 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Soldier Rising Race Odds: 4-1

A UK-bred that has been racing exclusively in the US since 2021, Soldier Rising has hit the board in 14 of his 17 career starts, but only has four wins and comes into this looking for his first victory in a year.

That being said, he has made two starts so far in 2023 in Grade 1 races and ran second in both. While no match for the winner he was the best of the rest last out in the (G1) Manhattan Stakes at Belmont, and kicked off his 2023 campaign by running second in the (G1) Man O’ War Stakes, also at Belmont.

Trainer Christophe Clement won the Bowling Green back in 2011. Jose Ortiz was the winning jockey in 2020.

Strong Quality Race Odds: 10-1

Strong Quality only tried stepping up to graded-stakes racing last out in in his 11th lifetime start, and eventually finished fifth the (G1) Manhatten after leading through most of the 1 1/4 mile race.

Prior to that he was the winner of an allowance-level event where he led wire-to-wire going 1 1/16th miles in track record time. He prepped for this by firing a bullet workouts n the Saratoga turf training track one week ago.

Mark Casse trains, Florent Geroux will be in the saddle.

Rockemperor Race Odds: 12-1

While he has struggled recently and has not hit the board in his last four starts, Rockemperor seems to love the Bowling Green, having won the race last year after finishing second in 2021.

For his career he has five wins and 16 in-the-money finishes in 29 lifetime starts.

Trainer Chad Brown and jockey Flavien Prat team up once again to try and defend their Bowling Green title.

As mentioned off the top, on paper this is a race with a clear favourite and bunch of others running for second place, and it would be easy to concede victory to Rebel’s Romance. You could probably toss the result of his last race and instead look to the fact that prior to that he had won five straight, and his Equibase speed figure of 127 for the Breeders’ Cup Turf is head-and-shoulders above anything else in this field.

With that being said, the trick is to find some value in the exacta, and I’m going to take a bit of a shot and use Strong Quality. He appears to be the best right now in terms of early speed, and jockey Geroux is likely to try to go to the front and then try to put them to sleep. Hopefully he’ll have something left to hold off the cavalry charge that will be coming late.
