With a two-week break in the rearview mirror, it's time to kick off a fresh PGA Tour season in Napa for a fourth straight year.

All eyes will be on Max Homa this week — and rightfully so. The back-to-back Fortinet Championship winner is returning to defend his titles and sits comfortably atop our odds board as a result.

Sahith Theegala Top 20 (+115)

There’s a lot to like about the trajectory Sahith Theegala is on right now. He improved in a number of key areas last season and his results followed suit — especially early on.

He finished sixth or better three times in six fall events last season and among those is a T6 here in Napa (also finished T14 here in 2021). Yes, the fall fields are light but that’s the point — he’s a cut above this watered-down field and should have no problem working his way into contention this week.

The story of Sahith’s 2023 campaign is a putter that improved 90 spots, going from 128th in strokes gained putting to 28th. He specifically flexed those muscles here at Silverado last season, gaining 4.76 strokes on the greens — a number good for sixth in the field. 

Otherwise, we’re looking at a guy who ranks second in the field in total strokes gained over the last year (behind Max Homa) and has even more room to grow. 

Homa is the back-to-back champ but considering he and JT have eyes on the Ryder Cup, the door may be open for someone like Theegala to break through in a big way this week.

Mark Hubbard over Taylor Montgomery (-120)

Taylor Montgomery came in hot after finishing the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour season strong and rode that momentum to eight Top 20s in his first nine PGA Tour starts last season, one of which was a third-place finish here in Napa. 

However, that’s simply not who he’s been of late. In 18 starts since then, he’s missed eight cuts and finished T22 or better just three times. Four of those missed cuts came in the last five starts of the season. 

And while Mark Hubbard can be hit or miss, he posted a handful of strong finishes through the summer months and should be considered the more reliable of the two this week. 

He ranks 14th in the field in total strokes gained over the last six months, is third on approach, and 15th from tee to green. Montgomery leads the field in putting but ranks 52nd overall thanks to ball-striking numbers that sit well outside of the Top 100. 

He may have been the better golfer this time last year but that form is clearly long gone.

Fortinet Championship field and favorites

As Max Homa's golf game continues to get stronger, his outright odds on any given week continue to get shorter. He won this event in 2021 with 60/1 odds, defended that title with 18/1 odds a season ago, and will now try for a three-peat as a short +750 solo betting favorite — odds he's never seen before on the PGA Tour.

Playing second fiddle on the odds board is Justin Thomas, who will be desperate to get off to a good start after a disappointing 2022-23 season that saw him miss out on the TOUR Championship for the first time since 2015. He's on the board between +1,200 and +1,400 but hasn't played this event since 2020 (T4). 

Beyond Homa and JT is a rather light field, which is to be expected at many of these fall events. Sahith Thegala sits third in the 18/1 range while Cam Davis and Stephan Jager round out the Top 5 at +2,200 apiece. 

2020 champion and Ryder Cup vice captain Stewart Cink is also playing this week and is available at +8,000. 2018 winner Kevin Tway can be had at 200/1.
