Bookmakers have been betting on the Melbourne Cup since the Wednesday after last year's race – so which horse has been the biggest firmer with just over 24 hours until the 163rd edition of Tuesday‘s great race?

In the past 24 hours, 10 of the 24 runners have shortened with in the fixed odds market of wagering giant TAB.com.au.

The highest volume of support since Monday continues to be for the Willie Mullins-trained favourite Vauban which accounts for 19 per cent of bets over the past 24 hours but the popular international raider has eased from $3.50 to $4.20.

This biggest firmer in the past day has been Vauban's stablemate Absurde which has had his price slashed from $21 into $12 with 10 per cent of TAB customers teaming up with the horse to be ridden by champion Aussie ex-pat Zac Purton.

The other best supported runners by volume of bets are last year's winner Gold Trip and Caulfield Cup winner Without A Fight.

They each account for 10 per cent of bets in the past 24 hours with Gold Trip's price easing from $5 to $6.50 while Without A Fight has firmed in from $7 to $6.

The Gai Waterhouse factor continues to make its mark on the 2023 Melbourne Cup with her runner Military Mission, trained in partnership with Adrian Bott, firming in from $34 to $23 off the back of five per cent of bets since Monday.

The biggest firming roughie in the past 24 hours has been Archer Stakes winner Kalapour which has shortened from $61 to $34.
