Melbourne Cup Runners 2023 For English and Irish Trainers

Since 2010 the Melbourne Cup has seen six winners from Europe take home the lucrative prize – two from Ireland, two from France and one each from England and Germany.

So, what horses will the English, Irish and rest of Europe be sending over to run in the Melbourne Cup 2023?

VAUBAN
Trainer: Willie Mullins (Ireland)
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Draw: 3
Weight: 8-9
Form: 411/11

Vauban is this year’s Melbourne Cup favourite and it’s easy to see why after top wins at Royal Ascot in June (watch below) and more recently at Naas in Ireland.

This Rich Ricci-owned Melbourne Cup runner is also a past Cheltenham Festival winner – having taken the 2022 Triumph Hurdle – but has been campaigned on the flat this summer with a tilt at this big Flemington Park race being the target.

With Ryan Moore, who won the Melbourne Cup in 2014, riding too he’s going to be a very popular pick to give Willie Mullins his first win in the race.

However, those against Vauban might cling to some big Melbourne Cup trends that he’ll need to overcome – you can see these here.

ABSURDE
Trainer: Willie Mullins (Ireland)
Jockey: Zac Purton
Draw: 8
Weight: 8-5
Form: 127-21

Second runner for the Willie Mullins team and was expected to be the ride for Frankie Dettori until the Italian got suspended at Ascot’s Champions Day last month. Absurde will now be ridden by Australian jockey Zac Purton, who is yet to win the Melbourne Cup.

Absurde was 7 1/2 lengths being his stablemate Vauban at Royal Ascot in June, so has ground to make up there.

But franked that form by taking the York Ebor Handicap at the end of August (watch below) and will head to Flemington Park as a live second string for the Mullins camp.

  • Bet On Absurde at 14/1 with BetMGM

OKITA SOUSHI
Trainer: Joseph O’Brien (Ireland)
Jockey: Dylan Gibbons
Draw: 20
Weight: 8-2
Form: 115130

From the Joseph O’Brien team that already have two Melbourne Cup wins under their belts with successes in 2017 with Rekindling and 2020 with Twilight Payment.

He runs Okita Soushi in 2023 in a bid for a famous Flemington three-timer and after a warm-up run in the Caulfield Cup (12th) should be spot on for this.

Does, however, have 10 lengths to find with the Caulfield Cup winner that day Without A Fight, but the longer trip is expected to suit and it’s hard to fault the top record in this race for O’Brien.

Prior to his Caulfield Cup run, Okita Soushi was third in the Irish St Leger Trial at the Curragh in August and another Royal Ascot winner in the race – having won the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes Handicap under Ryan Moore in June (watch below).

Former Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy rode him the last day, but is replaced with Dylan Gibbons, who is another Australian jockey hunting his first win in the race.

Bet On Okita Soushi at 33/1 with BetMGM
