Virginia comes into this game firmly in the top ten of the AP Poll and at 16-3 overall. However, the Cavaliers won’t be complacent, as they still trail Clemson by one game in the loss column atop the ACC standings.

Syracuse is in a much different place, sitting at just 13-9 overall and currently on the outside looking in for the NCAA Tournament. If the Orange have any hope of obtaining an at-large bid, they must win this game.

This game is a rematch from earlier this month, in which Virginia won 73-66 in their home arena. Syracuse trailed by as many as 23 points in that game before mounting a huge comeback to make the final score respectable. This time the game is in Syracuse, of course, where the Orange have been much better.

Despite the first game going over the total, the best bet from our #7 Virginia vs. Syracuse basketball predictions is on the under 132.5.

As mentioned above, game one between these two teams went over the game total. It wasn’t particularly close either, as the total closed at 127.5, and the game finished with 139 points. However, there are some signs from game one that seem like anomalies. First, the timing of the scoring from game one, particularly in the last ten minutes of the game, is quite misleading to how the game played out.

In the last ten minutes of the game, Syracuse scored 29 points. Remember, Syracuse finished with 66 points total, meaning the Orange scored roughly 44 percent of their point total in the last ten minutes of the game. Of course those minutes count, but keep in mind that Virginia led 50-27 with just over 14 minutes left in the game. It’s very likely Virginia lost their defensive intensity with such a big lead.

Another possible outlier from the game one box score is the ridiculous three-point shooting from both teams. To be fair, both teams rank inside the top 40 nationally in three-point percentage, so we should expect good three-point shooting. However, Syracuse shot 8/14 (57.1 percent), and Virginia shot 12/26 (46.2 percent) from beyond the arc. It’s very unlikely that both teams shoot well above their season average again.

Lastly, Virginia’s offense is much better against man-to-man defenses than against zone this season. Per Synergy, Virginia ranks in the 96th percentile against man defense this season, but just the 50th percentile against zones.
