Algeria to lay demons to rest with an opening game win

The Algerian team entered the 2021 AFCON as defending champions with an undefeated run of 34 games. Yet, they finished bottom of their group and then failed to qualify for the Qatar World Cup.

The Desert Foxes have only lost one of 24 fixtures since then and cruised through qualifying winning all bar one game. They conceded just twice along the way. They are the massive odds-on favourite to be the winner of an otherwise weak Group D, and rightly so.

The next one of my predictions is along a similar line to the above, but more aggressive, as I feel Algeria will want to lay a marker down.

We don’t often talk about recruitment in international football for obvious reasons. However, the Desert Foxes have added to an already impressive squad, with the additions of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Amine Gouiri and Houssem Aouar, all eligible to play for France.

The Algerians dominated their qualifying group, winning their opening five games. In all of those matches, Djamel Belmadi’s side had already secured a lead by half-time.

Promising forward talent can lead to goals

There are a host of household names in the Algerian squad, each capable of lighting up this AFCON tournament. One that is flying under the radar is Mohamed Amoura.

The 23-year-old striker has been putting together some very impressive stats this season at Union St. Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League. He has scored 13 goals in his 15 league appearances. He has also scored twice in the Europa League, with his last strike coming against the might of Liverpool.

Amoura scored in four of his last five appearances for his club before leaving for international duty. After scoring a goal in the final 14 minutes against Burundi on Tuesday, he enters the tournament with supreme confidence.
