All Star Mile gets a shake-up and prize money cut

In 2024, the All Star Mile will see significant changes, including the elimination of public voting, the introduction of three “win and you’re in” races, and up to nine wild card selections, all aimed at attracting top-tier horses.

Racing Victoria (RV) has decided to make these changes following issues with the current format, where uncertainty over final entries and trainers’ late decisions often rendered thousands of votes useless.

Key updates will include the addition of eight direct entry races, starting with the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield, along with two New Zealand Group 1 races – the Karaka Million 3YO Classic and the Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic – offering automatic qualification.

These changes are designed to streamline the field selection process, providing greater clarity for trainers and owners, and simplifying fan engagement.

The prize money for the All Star Mile will be reduced from $5 million to $4 million.

The field size will increase from 15 to 16, with the final nine starters to be selected by a panel from RV officials and the host club.

Matthew Welsh, RV General Manager of Racing, emphasised that the overhaul aims to attract the best possible field, reduce frustrations, and align more closely with the Australian Cup, scheduled two weeks after the All Star Mile.

The integration of New Zealand races is part of efforts to showcase Victorian racing and cater to the New Zealand market, acknowledging the significant impact Kiwi horses have had in Australia.

Further details about the owner ambassador selection process and the eighth qualifying race will be announced at a later date.
