Atlanta Motor Speedway

Hampton, GA

The weekend's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway marks the 118th race as a NASCAR Cup Series event. In 2022, this track got a face lift and received a new racing surface that runs 1.54 miles in a D shaped oval. This track goes from 5 degrees of banking on the straightaway while the turns have 28 degrees of banking in each one. You might notice that racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway reminds you of racing at Talladega and Daytona because of the new design of the track and NASCAR's new rules package. This track first opened up in 1960 with Fireball Roberts taking the checkered flag in the inaugural race.

This will be the first of two visits to Atlanta Motor Speedway in the 2023 season. A year ago, William Byron won this race and it was Chevy's second straight victory there. Since the remodeling of the track, it was the first win and Byron will always go down as the driver to tackle the upgraded track first. The next time around that NASCAR was in Atlanta, Chase Elliott earned the win over Ross Chastain which was a sweep for Chevrolet and the first time they've done that since 2007. Before that, Ford had a nice streak at Atlanta Motor Speedway. With the new setup at Atlanta Motor Speedway, it will be interesting to see if Chevrolet can keep up the three race streak.

Historical data isn't very helpful in this race as it's hard to forecast and has been updated. We might look at drivers that are currently driving well and have done well here. Brad Keselowski, Ross Chastain, William Byron and Kyle Larson have led the most laps on this track, so picking one of those drivers to win is understandable. The unpredictable nature of this race will make it a fun one!

Another late race caution flag benefited William Byron, and reminded Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick how much they dislike them. Byron took two new tires after the fourth caution flag of the day and ended up scooting past he teammate in Kyle Larson in overtime to win for the second time in a row. Once again, Aric Almirola and Harrison Burton spun out with just a handful of laps remaining and it gave Byron the chance to capitalize on the opportunity. It would be all he needed to get the win.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

With the win, William Byron propelled himself into first place with two wins on the season and just 44 points. Following him in the rankings is Kyle Busch who has one win and 122 points. Next Comes Ricky Stenhouse Jr. with 104 points, while Kevin Harvick (151 points) and Ross Chastain (148) round out the top five with no wins. After a slow start to the season, William Byron has won two in a row and will be a favorite in the race coming up this weekend.
