Another twist in All-Star Mile field with Fangirl in then ruled out

Barring some last-minute tweaking, the All-Star Mile field has been assembled.

There are nine horses in the $5 million race at Moonee Valley over 1600m on March 18 that were voted in by the public, five ‘wildcard’ nominations voted on by Racing Victoria and the Moonee Valley Racing Club and one emergency replacement.

The Chris Waller-trained Fangirl was named an emergency replacement after connections of Jacquinot decided not to take up the option of starting after being voted in by the public.

But then Chris Waller Racing announced on Tuesday that Fangirl would also not run.

“After lengthy consideration in relation to Fangirl running in the All-Star Mile, the Inghams and I have agreed she is best suited to run in the Group 1 George Ryder next Saturday instead at her home track,” the trainer said via Twitter.

Fangirl is the $3 favourite in futures markets for the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on March 18.

The 1600-metre All-Star Mile would have seen the four-year-old mare make her first trip to that course, but the more familiar surrounds of Rosehill gives the winner of the Group 1 Vinery Stakes at Newcastle in 2022 – then run over 1850-metres - the chance to improve on her second-placing in the Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill last October.

The Fangirl decision has paved the way for Godolphin’s Cascadian to run his second All-Star Mile.

Cascadian is trained by James Cummings and stormed home from last to fifth in last year’s All-Star Mile.

Alenquer was given the first wildcard last week, RV and the MVRC have since handed Laws Of Indices, Pounding, Aegon and My Oberon a ticket into the race.

Final acceptances for the race will be at 10am next Tuesday with the barrier draw to be conducted that afternoon.

Should a horse voted into the All-Star Mile Top 10 be withdrawn between before final acceptances, it will be replaced by the highest-ranked provisional emergency at the time based on eligible earnings since February 1, 2022.

The current first emergency is now Group 1-winning three-year-old filly Sheeza Belter, who finished 11th in the public vote (and was the second provisional emergency).

Should a wildcard selection be withdrawn prior to final acceptances, it will be replaced by another wildcard chosen at the discretion of RV and the MVRC.
