Arsenal vs Manchester United predictions

Neither Arsenal nor Manchester United has set the Premier League alight in the first few weeks of the season.

The Gunners beat both Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace by one-goal margins in their first two outings of 2023/24, before a disappointing 2-2 draw with Fulham last time out.

Meanwhile Manchester United have registered home victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, but they were soundly beaten 2-0 on a visit to Tottenham Hotspur in between those two contests.

Mikel Arteta will probably be more pleased with what he has seen from his side so far than Erik ten Hag.

Arsenal took their eye off the ball against Forest and allowed them to halve the deficit late on, but they still emerged triumphant. In the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace, Arsenal showed plenty of grit and determination to hold on with 10 men.

The Gunners should really have seen out the game against Fulham, particularly as they led 2-1 against a team with a numerical disadvantage following Calvin Bassey’s red card.

But on the balance of play, Arsenal should easily have picked up all three points. They created numerous chances but were too wasteful in front of goal.

Still, if Arsenal are to push Manchester City all the way this season, they need to tighten things up. Sunday’s showdown with Manchester United will be a stern test of their title credentials.

📝 Arsenal vs Manchester United betting tips

Arsenal and Manchester United both have questions to answer, but the home team look best placed to emerge victorious here.

Arsenal to win - 17/20 (BetUK)

The concern for Ten Hag is that his team have not yet turned in a convincing display over 90 minutes this season.

Manchester United were very lucky to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in gameweek one. Their opponents were the better team at Old Trafford and they only lost because of their profligacy in front of goal.

United had their moments in a 2-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, mostly in the first half, but that result was ultimately a fair reflection of the game.

Last time out against Nottingham Forest, United mounted a spirited comeback to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 advantage. But conceding twice within four minutes of kick-off is not exactly a recipe for success.

United have looked especially vulnerable in transition and that is what could cost them here.

Arsenal are a possession-based team but they also thrive on quick turnovers thanks to the incisive passing of Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice’s ball-carrying ability, and the speed of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

We must also take into account United’s dire away record in big games. Last season they picked up one point from a possible 24 at the stadiums of teams that finished in the top nine.

They then picked up where they left off in that loss to Tottenham the weekend before last. The smart money is on Arsenal in this one.

Over 3.5 goals - 7/5 (Unibet)

Both fixtures between these two teams last term were gripping. Manchester United won 3-1 at Old Trafford, although Arsenal were the better team for long periods of that match.

The Gunners then triumphed 3-2 in the return game thanks to a last-minute winner from Eddie Nketiah.

In fact, each of the last four meetings between this pair have featured at least four goals. That makes this a tempting wager for Sunday’s showdown.

Another reason to strongly consider over 3.5 goals is that neither defence has looked overly secure up to now.

Arsenal have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight home games. Both Nottingham Forest and Fulham - inferior sides to United - have found the net at the Emirates so far.

Arteta is still searching for the right formula at the back having surprisingly dropped Gabriel Magalhaes, who has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

United, for their part, have looked ropey in each of their matches, particularly in transition. Their xG against stands at 5.2, only the 12th best in the league.

This promises to be an entertaining affair.

Bukayo Saka to score any time - 15/8 (bet365)

There will be plenty of talented attackers on show at the Emirates this weekend.

Yet there is a sense that Manchester United are still searching for the right combinations up front.

Anthony Martial started as the centre-forward against Nottingham Forest, with Marcus Rashford to his left and Antony to his right.

The latter has still not lived up to his £85m price tag and Rashford has been below par in the first three matches of 2023/24.

The England international could return to a central berth on Sunday, even though he prefers operating from the left.

Arsenal are in better shape up top. Gabriel Jesus could return through the middle after injury, although Leandro Trossard will hope to keep his place in the XI.

Out wide Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli will cause United plenty of problems. Saka in particular could take advantage of the fact that the Red Devils do not have a natural left-back following Luke Shaw’s injury.
